I just want to let the guys know my side of story that decide to come out to FL & try to start or move your business into this state like I did.. I just recently moved here from North Carolina 5 months ago with a new cdl & started my dump truck company in south FL. I bought my dump truck here & spent around 30k in a dump truck (junk) & have put around 10k in it thee past few months. All on suspension brakes & tires.. it’s my fault for being in a hurry trying to to get to work quickly & buying a truck with problems that will get you in trouble with dot let alone safety. The motor & trans have been great thank god! I will get to the bottom line & say that the work pay isn’t what we expect. Yes we get paid by the ton & yes we work 6 days a week. Also we work night shift in asphalt in which I work also & that’s by the hour most of the time & yes it’s garbage compared to North Carolina but we work 6 days also. I will say there’s a lot of work & you can work as much as your truck will let you work & your health. I try to work everyday & has been okay after all but it does take up a lot of your time & I wish I could’ve stayed in North Carolina although the weather all the time is great here . I came down here for personal reasons & family but other than that I think reconsider moving down here.. also keep in mind you’ll most likely work under a broker in which they usually charge a 10-12.5% off your check & if you dont have insurance under you they will provide it for another 12.5 % on top of that. Also since I just started my dump truck company & I have a new cdl & at 30 years old & no bad history of tickets or accidents, I pay a s%#t ton of money just for insurance.. if you have experience in your cdl 2 years or more & no accidents etc , then that will help some but not in my case.. im North Carolina born from Hispanic descent & yes Spanish is all they know down here. Some places only talk in Spanish which to me is not a problem but could be for others.. this is my side of story & wish luck to anyone coming down here with not knowing how it really is out here in the Dump truck biz.
