I'm about to go to orientation. My trucking jobs have been verified already but the last job I had was 1099 work. My high school friend who lives where i do locally paid me cash to do some work for him here and there. I started in January so no tax info yet. He pays me cash. He's a master electrician and just got his business number last year. He told me ge owes 14 grand for 2019 taxes and already owes 14 grand that was due 3 days ago to the IRS... So basically this guy is running a sheety business.
I've been trying to call him and text hom letting him know i put him down on my application (i told him this before i did it too). Well in the last week has hasn't text or answered my phone calls about getting a letter of employment verification. He finally called me like 3 days ago saying he's been really stressed and that he would call back the company who's been trying to get a hold of him (from a job im not taking). Well I know he hasnt called them back and im worried when i go to orientation for the job i do want, hes not going to reply to them. Idk what to do. I have text messages from him about work. But no check stubs or 1099.
I could come up with a letter of verification but thats it. Im thinking this guy is not going to answer the phone.
You might be asking why take cash feom this guy. Well I worked with him and his dad already. His dad ran a business before his son got his masters lisence. I was paid cash and got a 1099. But his son seems to be a little more unorganized.
I'm thinking he dosnt have insurance to be hiring me or something and hes scared. I dont even think hes going to 1099 me but i really don't know or care. I just need to verify this or idk what to tell me new employer.
Anyone been in this situation? Any suggestions?

Oakley Transport in Lake Wales, FL.
I just don't want to go to orientation only to be sent home. I live in Texas and can't afford to travel back on my own dime.
Im trying to find information about DOT non driving job verification requirements now.
Im about to go for drug test/physical here locally on the 27th. Orientation is on the 3rd. Im hoping once I pass that and they have a little money invested in me, they won't be so strict. But i just want to do the right thing and not lie to anyone or burn any bridges. -

I would have said that I was unemployed during that time since it was a cash gig and will likely never be reported.
Kind of late for that now I guess. -
They usually want a tax return or paystub.

But like i said i started in January so there is no tax information yet. And i got paid cash so no check stubs...
Thats why im so pissed off at this guy right now. If He screws me on my employment verification, im going to report him to the IRS. -
The mega I work for wanted a signed and notarized statement that I worked for this cash. I wrote it out and met them where it could be notarized. If you call and ask your recruiter, they should be able to tell you the details. They have to show due diligence in confirming your employment history.
Maybe a "bribe" of some sort might help... coffee, or lunch or something. It's not like helping you with a letter is reported to tax ppl or anything, it just goes in your employee file.Southtxhauler420 Thanks this. -

It's BS bc I already worked for this guy and shouldn't have to be going threw this. Like i said I got text messages and I know he pays 2 other employees strictly off the books bc of some personal reason on the employees behalf. But he actually hired me bc i know my sheet and am a reliable worker. Like i said, i dont care if he w2 me or 1099 or dost do anything at all... All my family keeps telling me that he won't burn me. We go wayyy back. But idk this guy has changed the past few years.Last edited: Jul 23, 2020
