    Rewarding incompetence.....

I am the type of person who appreciates someone who goes out of their way to do a good job,who takes pride in their work.

I try to be understandable when someone does substandard work because i dont know what kind of day they have been having.

For this reason i always tip my server at restaraunts no matter the quality of service. No telling what these people have gone thru today.

But lately i have been noticing an ever growing trend in restaraunts everywhere and not just truck stop restaraunts ; that poor service is getting to be the norm and they dont seem to care but still expect a tip..

This all came to a head for me tonight at the Dennys /FlyingJ in Carlisle,Pa.

I had not planned on eating there and was only going to grab a salad from the deli and eat in the truck.. But after another 14 hr day i changed my mind when entering and decided to eat at Dennys.
The food was good but the service was horrible...there were several dirty tables but a lot of staff running around looking busy but nobody actually doing anything.
I sat at the counter thinking the service would be better but was sadly wrong..she did get my drink quickly but never offered a refill....took my order and brought me my salad but 30 minutes later came by to tell me she forgot to place my order...by then my drink was empty but still no offer for a refill even though i was shaking the empty glass ...

my food was brought to me by someone else...my waitress later slowed down long enough to leave my ticket but no refill...

all this time she was going from one end of the restaraunt to the other..not doing anything just talking to other employees who were not doing anything as well...

so...for the first time i decided it was time to stop rewarding incompetence and refused to leave a tip..this is really the only recourse i had...along with encouraging the others at the counter to do the same which they did..those who were just sitting down decided not to stay after hearing my complaints along with the others sitting at the counter with me....

from now on i will only tip for service above and beyond..why should people be rewarded for simply doing their job poorly..

I've done exactly what you're going to do. Those that provide above and beyond service receive a healthy tip usually in the 20-30% range Those that don't get nothing or very little.

Funny thing is...i stopped at a restaraunt last week..not a truck stop...and when i looked at the menu they had in bold type .... 20% gratuity added to all orders no matter the party size..

i figured if the service or food was so bad they forced you to leave a tip then i better get out quick and i did..

When you get lousy service its usually because of lousy management. Dennys
is lousy anyway. I won't eat there. It's to
bad Flying J doesn't have the buffet like they used too. Everything Pilot takes over goes.down hill.

I always leave at least a 20% tip for good service, more for excellent service..If you run into a place that does not provide the service you expect always leave a tip so the person knows you did not forget.
As a rule for me if service is that bad I will leave a penny, this shows the server I did not forget the tip and what I value the service he/she provided.
Good service/Bad service shouldn't be rewarded with the same tip, it is like rewarding bad behavior..

Remember now that the wait staff is entitled to a tip.

    Everyone's a winner.
