Most companies want recent experience. How recent depends on the company. If you don't drive for at least two years or more you will need to go thru some kind of training again. If you let your DOT physical expire the DMV in your state will cancel your CDL in 30 days unless you show them proof that you have a current DOT approved physical. They are suppose to notify you by mail that your current DOT physical will expire and if you don't bring in a copy of your new one your licence will revert back to a standard drivers license. To get your CDL back you will have to retake the CDL written and driving test again.

Go get your physical done before it expires and you won't have to retest. Then go to the DMV and show it to them before your current physical expires and DMV will link it to your CDL in their computer system.

I recently checked with the dmv about this same situation since my wife has not driven in over 2 years and her physical card expired several months ago.
The dmv said her cdl reverted to a non cdl license when her card expired. However if she wants it reinstated she has 5 years to get a new physical card and send it in and they would reinstate her cdl without taking any tests.

Never let it expire. Renewal isn't a problem. In my state, I can renew my CDL 12 months before expiration as long as they have a current long-form medical on file. Check with your state.

Make sure it's ok to do that in the state you live in. Tennessee does things a bit different then other states. I've had tickets in other states that Tennessee did not list on my driving record. Every state does things different. Just call up the DMV in your state and ask them what their policy is to be safe.

air breeze has the only really correct answer
example illinois makes even experienced drivers
transferring from another state take a road test
    like a new driver

It's all about the Benjamin's...and Illinois desperately needs Benjamin's by the millions.
