Hello all, figured I'd give this a shot as I can't really find an answer anywhere.
I have a 2007 880 d16 500 (4 year oldcrate engine with 500,000kms or 300,000miles put in by the previous owner) 2million on the truck. Own it for about a year.
So the problem (s)
The truck always seemed to have a little missfire took it to Volvo paid 3600 changed the mass air nothing happened.
I believe they did a software update as well.
The miss fire got worse, but it's erratic. Generally the motor runs fine no smoke not terrible mpg (5.5 to 7) pulling a dry van legal us weight lots of power no complaints love the engine.
But after getting it out of the garage for its saftey the missfire evolved into the engine cutting out mostly for brief periods (5-10 secs) and left in hear it just resumes running. I get vibration pulling hills around 50mph but my steers are partially to blame and at other odd speeds when the engine is u see load.
When it cuts out my rpm guage goes crazy. Today I couldn't get 40 miles without it shutting down for extended periods and needing to be restarted.
The codes.
I have the ECM maintenance code showing up. EGR mass air code, randomly a turbo code (these are all from the last 1000 miles) timing sensor crank.
He only thing I was thinking is that my white ground might be the culprit as I was messing with it and the problem became worse. Volvo over here in Roanoke thinks it's the harness or the cam and crank sensor or all 3. (I ain't paying an Incompetent dealer to change a harness)
So any suggestions would be appreciated.
Oh and it idles pretty much ok no weird shaking. Very seldom does it stall idling.
When the truck is running and I play with the accessable wires it makes no effect. It seems only when I'm pushing the motor to cut out.
Thanks in advance.
Just another d16 problem

Have you put fresh ground wires in everything yet?
My D16 did some crazy stuff when my grounds failed.... Like not being able to shut off lol. Anyway, new ground wires fixed allot of issues.
I think the grounding on Volvo trucks is terrible. -
That would be my first order of business in the morning, cancelled the rest of my week and I'm gonna get really aquanted with the flying j asphalt
-
My 07 d16 in my 780 would shine on on its best day and make ya pull your hair out the next ..great engines when they run right but mine was a money pit .
With only a few exceptions dealer service was horrible too
..and ill never own another Volvo.KB3MMX and Bigmike1977d16 Thank this. -
Or at least another Volvo with a Volvo engine.
In my case, my Volvo with a N14, only saw the Volvo Stealership once in the 13 years I owned it.
I either fix it myself or take it to my trusted mechanic, otherwise it's been a great Pre-Emission truck, no complaints whatsoever.KB3MMX, Bigmike1977d16 and bzinger Thank this. -
So for information purposes I'll update.
Cleaned off all the battery connectors cleaned the contacts on the firewall. Followed as many of the lines as I could in a flying j parking lot.
Cleared the codes although they were showing inactive after a night of idling except for the EGR mass air.
Test ran it through the parking lot seems to be a bit peppier, without any stalling or stuttering. No codes except the EGR which did not clear.
Time for a shower and see where it dies on me. -
***update***
Hope this helps someone else.
4 miles test with a small hill i81 x84 to x80 (I'm empty)
No issues truck seems to running fine no new codes didn't sputter or stall.
Now for the next leg of the trip.
Crossing my fingers -
Well did about 20 miles was running great generally speaking.
Sputtered once going up a hill and i stopped at the next rest area to see if there was a code.
So I have electric fault
Mid 128 pid354 fmi3 reletive humidity?
Oil level fault
mid 128 PID 98 FMI 5
I topped it up before setting out.
Gonna run it some more to see what happens. -
Did about 200 miles
Cut here and there but nothing major.
Seamed to cut when it needed more power to climb a hill. Engine would vibrate then shake. Backed off the pedal it would even out a bit.
Code reapeared
Timing sensor, crank
Data erratic
Inactive
Mid 128 sid22 fmi2
Mid 128 PID 98 fmi5
Mid 128 PID 171 fmi9
MD 128 PID 175 FMI 5
Mid 128 PID 35 FMI 5
Having the fuel changed as a precaution.KB3MMX Thanks this. -
Filter changed, truck runs realtively better still shakes when it hits hills and minor engine cutting out less often.
So far crank code did not come back since last clearing.
Stopped at a dealer that had time to "take a look" at my EGR mass flow that's under warranty. Let's see how much that cost.
Pardon the excessive posting but I think if anyone is having the same problem a step by step account will be of great help as most of the post I found online just die with no information after a certain point.
