Hi all I just bought a new truck and I was wondering if I need to increase the horsepower for flatbed work the specs are Volvo 2011, Cummins ISX 400hp, Fuller 13 Spd RTLO-169-13, DS404 40,000lbs, Ratio 3.70 front axle weight 13500 rear 40000 tires 22.5. Any takes on what I would need to do to increase hp and what it would cost?

you would need to get the cpl number, should be on the id plate by cpu on the side of the engine. serial number may work if you cant find cpl. Call Cummins. the cpl will tell them what components are in your engine and what cal files can be flashed to the ecm. In other words what horsepower and torque settings it can be "turned up" to. Assuming it can be turned up with no parts changing, then $200 or so they charge to hook up laptop and change cal on ecm.
400 would be fine for flatbed work though, especially with 13 sp.
If you'd like to pm me the cpl # I will look it up and tell you what horsepower and torque cal options you have.mp4694330 Thanks this. -
If you wanted more horsepower, why didn't you buy a different truck that had the horsepower?

If you call someone other than Cummins, such as the diesel doctor. Ask them which of the 7800 parameters they change and why ? Then ask them to show you Calterm on their laptop. Because if they don't have it, just Insite, they aren't "tweaking and tuning" anything. They are simply loading cals someone else created which may or may not work with your engine correctly. In some cases, they only change the name of the file to something like 550 hp / 2050 ft lbs. Just the name, the settings stay the same.

Just about any truck will work for flatbed, just as important as hp is wheel base. Do you hve room for a headache rack and tool boxes, room to load freight over the front.

You just made a big mistake, you should've posted a question here first if this truck was road worthy! My suggestion is, that truck is a lemon and why the previous owner got rid of a four year truck! Sell it and buy any other truck without an EGR engine and you will make money!

Lots of fleets unload trucks after 3 years so probably not an issue. But, asking questions like these just after buying it raises red flags. The research should happen before cash changes hands. Anyways, too late now, If you don't plan pulling oversize or heavy the truck will be just fine, good luck.

He might just want another set of opinions.

Its like in RACING torque is the factor most forget about
HORSEPOWER IS HOW FAST YOU CAN HIT THE WALL
but
TORQUE IS HOW FAR YOU CAN TAKE THE WALL WITH YOU
