I will be going to the Dallas school at the very beginning of 2012. Had a few questions real fast. How are there trucks? There website says they all have apu's, inverters, and mini fridges. Will I get to keep my company truck when I go home or will I always be in different trucks? Where do you put your truck when you go home or do you take it with you? I live in New Mexico, I don't think there is a stevens yard here. Also, there pet policy, is it no pets on company trucks? I keep forgetting to ask the lady about these questions when I call her... Can I pay more then the $26 a week towards the school? I wanna pay it off as fast as possible as I don't like being in debt...
1 more thing, my list of stuff to bring says to bring 4 family references and 2 non family references... Do I really need to... I don't really have 4 family members to get references from...... Thanks all for taking the time to answer my questions![]()

OK, I haven't been there for a couple of years but I read the Aviary regularly. I don't know about fridges, but I hear all the trucks do have APU's now, if they have an APU, they have an inverter. Since you will be driving your truck when you go home you won't be slip seated. Unless you take an extreme amount of time off, then they will want you to drop the truck at the yard and clean it out.
As a company driver you will need to secure the truck and trailer and your nearest Peterbilt/Kenworth/ThermoKing dealer during home time.Stevens only has the one terminal, they do have a few drop yards but I am unaware of one in NM. No pets period. Unless maybe for true O/O, I know L/O are not allowed.
You can certainly pay more. You just let them know how much and they can take it out automatically and you will probably never miss it.
They just want names and numbers of family and friends they can call and ask what kind of person you are. Silly idea in my opinion, like you are going to give them the name and number of your high school nemesis so he can trash you to them.
If you are an orphan like me, or just short on the family side, just give them what you have and explain. I don't see where they will send you home because you don't have 4 family members.
Good luck, I found Stevens academy to be an excellent learning experience. Go to the Texas DPS website and download the cdl manual and start studying now. Chapter 14 is the permit test.
Make sure and say hi to Terry, the driving instructor, tell him how much you look forward to working at Stevenson Transportation. He really gets a kick out of it when people call the company that! -
Basically what Fozzy said. No mini fridge, and no pets. Living in ABQ is a great thing...I was born and raised in Ruidoso. You should have absolutely no problems getting home since I-40 is a major freight lane.
Oh and I wouldn't mess with Terry too much...he's trying to quit smoking right now. Think Ron White quitting smoking and you've got Terry. -
Well, I live about 22 miles south of abq. So I'll have to leave my truck with a truck dealership while I'm in town. Hrm, dad and I are looking to move once my sisters turn 18 and get the hell out of the house. He wants to build a big metal building out in the middle of nowhere so he can work on his cars in peace... Well, I have to call Angie tomorrow and tell her I'm still comin.

So like Los Lunas? Anyways...Stevens is a good company. You shouldn't have any issues with them.
-
How you handling the weather?
-
Haha, ya. Los Lunas. The weather here sucks! I'm in a desert and its snowing more then in Ohio (my best friend lives there).
Well, I have a class A permit already so the testing stuff can't be THAT much harder. The tests out here were pretty easy. I'm wondering if I should just get my CDL out here though. I just sold a car (I have a few) so I have money as to when I made this and was looking into Stevens. But I think it would just be easier to go to the Stevens school and just pay them off as fast as possible as the courses seem to be the same length of time. Do they take any days off during the courses?
If I'm with the trainer on the road during the phase 1 and phase 2 training and he goes home, does that come out of my home time as well? Do I even accrue home time while training? Do they FORCE you to take a day off every so many weeks? Best friend and I wanna go to Seoul in April for a week, just wondering what the validity of that would be. How are the miles for a company driver?
Also, Smokr, love your sig quote. Its so true as sad as that may be =/ -
If you don't have a CDL, the NM permit won't help you if you go to Stevens' academy. Texas does not recognize any other states' permits, so you'll have to take their permit tests. But they're all cut from the same basic DOT manual. If you do get a CDL on your own, you won't have the big commitment with Stevens. Check out my post called "Detailed Info About Stevens Costs" here. It will give you a very good picture of what you're really signing up for...getting a CDL on your own might be cheaper and you'll probably sleep in your own bed every night.

Well. I get on the bus in 4 hours. Got all my stuff packed. 20 hour bus ride here I come. I think its stupid how I'm going to Dallas, then I'm gonna be there for 4 hours before the bus drives 20 minutes to mesquite... What do I do when I get to mesquite? I can't find a shuttle number on my paperwork. Gotta leave my house in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Freakin so bored waiting. I hope the Dallas greyhound terminal has decent wifi and charging stations so I can play WoW or something... OH, on the 36 month commitment thing. How EXACTLY does that work. I basically want to pay them off as FAST as possible. I sold one of my race cars, got money coming for it in about 3 weeks, plus income taxes. I am thinking about telling stevens to take most of the money out of my check so its just done with... I got an offer to work for another company making quite a bit more money BUT I need my full class A CDL. From what I read the school is 3200-3900 for 3 years. If you leave before the 3 years its 5900... Or is that only if you leave and still owe money? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Did I mention I'm getting bored of waiting on this darn bus -_- -
For the shuttle you call the hotel, Crosslands Extended stay 972-270-3630
You can pay off the loan early. Once you pay it off you are free to leave Stevens and go wherever you want, but I recommend staying at your first company for at least 1 full year before jumping ship.
Good luck with school. Stay cool, relax and dont be a know it all
