I just passed my state testing and got my cdl - I am studying for my endorsements and will have my hazmat, doubles-triples, and tanker endorsements by weeks end.
My school had all of the recruiters come out, but the prospect of making only 350 a week for months while being away from home the whole time just didn't work for me. So I decided to try and find my own job.
I found an owner operator who was looking for a team driver from Chicago to South Dakota - 4 runs a week. Leave Monday afternoon, and making one round trip a day until Friday afternoon, off every weekend. And the pay is 800 a week - a LOT more then the new trucker hiring companies offer. (Swift, CRST, Schneider, Werner, US Express)
Basically I would be driving about 4400 miles in 4 days (2200 each, its a team run)
My question is this, I am a little nervous obviously being new and going on my first run and all - just curious how the run from Chicago to Souix Falls SD is ?
Just got my CDL - and my first job !

That should be a pretty easy peasy run! Other than the snow. Way to go man! Sounds like you have a pretty good gig lined up for yourself. I think you will be much more happy running for an O/O than a mega carrier. You will definitely learn a hell of a lot more. Not just driving either. If at all possible try to do a little research on the guy you are going to work for. Not that he isn't legit but just to make sure you will getting paid. I am sure you will most likely be fine but those people are out there. Also since you aren't going with a large company you most likely won't be able to get any advances or financial help so make sure you have some emergency cash of some sort on you. If for any reason things don't work out and the guy kicks you out of his truck you don't want to be stranded. Good luck man, keep us posted.

Being you'll be driving team with an experienced owner op I wouldn't be too nervous. Just take your time and don't let anyone bully you.
As for Chicago to Souix Falls... I-90 the whole way. Not bad. About 580 miles or so I think. You could also go out US 20 and work your way up for something different. Overall, once you get out of Chicago the rest is really easy. -
Congrats. The winter driving up there is only about 9 months long per year. LOL.
Good luck and safe miles. -
formertaxidriver Thanks this.

Thanks guys I will keep you all posted on how it goes for me, I am just excited to have an opportunity to not only make a decent buck right out of school - but also to be home for 3 days every week ! !
I always thought the way my school put it, is that going with one of the new driver companies (crst, schneider, usexpress, swift, werner, ect.) was the only way to get the 1-2 years experience needed to get a job with a local company. I really hope this works out with this guy, I may have just gotten extremely lucky. Right place right time? -
Nice! How did you find that job?
-
Nice Job. What school did u attend?

Found the job in the local classifieds. Just called around and found someone willing to meet with me - I never lie, I told him over the phone right off I was a new driver and just completing a 240 hour course. He wanted to meet me to see if we got along I guess, he seemed cool.
I went (currently going) to Star Truck Driving School in Hickory Hills IL. A very good school. I already passed my state exam (pretrip, skills, road) but still have a week left of school, so I am using this time to just work my endorsements and get some extra road hours and docking time. (The school is in an actual trucking terminal) -
But I don't like the list of starter companies the school suggested, and I don't know nuthin yet!
