Thanks! Greatest feeling ever. Very proud of my accomplishment. Yea doing the same route everyday would become monotonous I'm sure.

Yes all companies I've contacted said they will work with my military obligation, thankfully.

    Thanks again!

Thanks, I had my phone interview yesterday and they said I will hear back in a week if I can continue on through the process. Oil field Im leaning towards my back-up. $20 a hour is very tempting. 65 hours a week with OT would be about $70,000 first year salary so I'm stuck between those two.

    What I bolded and underlined

    Public transit. PERIOD!

As an Air Guard, you "may have" vet status, and can EASILY have time off. As a public transit, YOU WILL NEVER DO BETTER in PENSION and BENEFITS.!

    Steelcity Thanks this.

Congratulations!! Just got my CDL this morning, too. I have all these companies to consider. I haven't made up my mind but have several pre-hires. I'm just SO motivated now that I actually have the CDL in my hand!

Awesome, congrats man! are you in Pittsburgh?

Yes the benefits and pension for the bus company are just like the military. But the hiring process is so long I can't afford to wait any longer. Is it bad to switch jobs if they call me a couple months after I get hired? I really dont want to burn any bridges or cause any hard feelings.

Steelcity, here is the way "I see it". Times have changed, people have changed, companies have changed and most certainly benefits and pensions have changed. At one time many a person my age would give our right coconut to be a city, town or state employee. The monies these public service jobs pay, sucks. But back then you didn't work for the pay, your work for the retirement AND health benefits. Unless one has a solid union job at an LTL company, NO OTR company will ever have the same benefits. So say you spend "up to" 10 years messing around with OTR, and non-union local work, that would be minus 10 years into a sweet retirement and health benefits from a public service job.

Why do you think people become cops, or firemen? For the thrill of it? hardly, for the retirement and health benefits.
When people that are younger than say 30, they care NOT about retirement and think "maybe someday" to get a 401 plan. NO OTR company has ANY good let alone poor 401 plan. All the youngin's think is MONEY NOW!

Get to be my age, or the age of many others here, and you look into your retirement savings and say, "geez, I pee'd away x number of years, and all I'll have is x amount of money to retire on, I'll have to keep working till I'm 70".

A person my age, knows "where the money is, for the future".

Best of luck for your self, family and the future.

Oh yeah, the hiring process can be long, but you can grab something now, then when they call?

It's on you, brother, it's all on you.

Oh and by the way, here in MY state, become an employee? ALL your benefits start THAT DAY!

check out local beverage haulers, its hard work so the turn over is often somewhat high, you prob wont get on at the top paying outfit in our area with no exp but alot of those outfits take new people.

I worked as a beer hauler for years and we hired a lot of new drivers, same for alot of the other beverage companies

Excellent advice sir. I really appreciate you taking the time to write that. I will probably be holding one of these local gigs until the transit company calls.
