:biggrin_25521:Um..... does anybody know if after truck driving school - if there are any companies at all that do not make you go OTR for 6 or 8 weeks with a mentor??? :biggrin_25524: My problem is that hubby is OTR. We have NO ONE to watch our house or animals on a daily basis for a few DAYS let alone a matter of weeks..... I want to go to truck driving school and get a local type job (even if I have to settle for dump truck driving or something). Is there any way at all that you know of for me to by-pass the OTR mentorships that it appears most trucking companies require????? :biggrin_2552:

Alot of us older drivers started out loading trucks, progressed to yard jockey (moving and parking trailers, a valuable skill), inner city deliveries and finally out on our own.

Some local companies might hire in-experienced drivers. You just have to look around. It depends on how much time and effort they want to put into a newbie. The ones that do are usually thinking "long term employee". Talk to your local beverage/food service/trash service/gravel/cement operations and feel them out.

Watkins Shepard is an over the road company. They do not require you go with a trainer. This is not something I would recommend, especially this time of year. Don't get me wrong, I have heard nothing but good from their drivers, however it really is not smart to go out without a trainer. Plus winter seems to be really pounding hard out there this year! If your plans are to drive a dump truck I wouldn't spend the money on trucking school. You can walk into the DMV and get that license. Also I really wouldn't jump into this whole thing unless you are planning on being gone from home. That is just part of the industry. That is why they pay more than other jobs. I think you should re-access your plans.

Well Chompi - the reason I want to go to truck driving school is because - for ME - it will be free. (paid for by an outside agency). I would LIKE to to the tractor trailers.... but would "settle" for dump trucks and such if that's all I can get. I would like to do the big rigs so that eventually my husband and I could team. All costs will be covered including the physicals up to and including the license.

Thanks to all the rest of you who let me know that OTR is not a requirement with some companies. That certainly makes me feel better. If I didn't NEED to be home I wouldn't mind the OTR mentoring thing... it's just that somebody really needs to be here daily. :biggrin_25514:

Hey Flying Dutchman - I didn't mean it the way it sounds - we live in a very rural area - 25 miles from the nearest town and that's not a very big one. I'm not sure what's actually available within a 50 mile radius of us and actually, I was thinking of dump truck driving as my first choice - but here it seems to be pretty seasonal. I need something full time - all year long.

If I can't get into the big rigs all year long, then I would go with dump trucks seasonally. The main goal is the paycheck.
