I was gonna say the same thing, settling for dump truck????!! Local construction transport be dump trucks, concrete mixers, flatbeds, or what ever it pays #### good here and you're home every night an weekends off. A lot of the small dump truck companies will hire you even with no experience.

I actually graduated from a trucking school with my class A about 1 1/2 years ago and refused to do OTR trucking, Its just not for me. So I was able to hold out at my old job and about a month and a half ago after submiting my resume with a couple of local LTL carriers in my area. I got hired with no experience at Old Dominion Freight Line, I was trained for 4 weeks on line haul and P&D. Ive been on my own for 2 weeks now and love it, the pay is not bad at all, the benefits are pretty good, Im home every night, its M-F. The terminal manager and lead dispatchers are decent people and always seem to be willing to help when I run into problems while Im out for the day. The only down side is 12-14 hour days and no overtime until after 60 hours but I can deal with that.

That doesn't sound too bad to me.... I'll check out the website (hopefully they do have one) and see what its all about and if there are any terminals near us. Thanks!

I don't know how close you are to "Brattleboro, VT" "Newburg, NY" but look up Webster Trucking corp./C&S Wholesalers. They have yards dotted all over the northeast, and they do roughly about 90% day runs with groceries, and about 10% of their fleet is sleepers, but the home time is plenty. I've worked for them, but it has been awhile, and they used to hire right out of schools, J.B. Hunt who also contracts with them has done the same, but not sure as far as recent. I'll tell you this though, just bug them if they tell you no, they crack pretty easy if your license is good.

    Good luck with it.

Thanks Lee76 - I'll check it out!!!! Newburg is about 3 hours from here.... maybe 4.

Producepimp - hubby is OTR. We both can't be because we have animals to take care of at home and getting rid of them is not an option. When I took them in, I signed on for life. Just like folks who have human kids.

Shes up on the bottom of Lake Ontario east of Rochester a ways and as she said this is a secluded area! She does not want to go OTR and I don't blame her!

Trucking is turning into a cesspool!
About the only thing she could do without having to drive over an hour just to get to work is to either check with the county or state for a job. Heck, go get the CDL book. Read it and take the tests that are all through the book and when you can answer all the questions without thinking of the answers just go take the written test and try to find someone with a truck and trailer that will let you use it for the road test and maybe to teach you how to shift and back up in the known areas of the test and then pass the drivers test and get on with a state or local job!

There are a few orchards that might need local drivers to haul apples to the plants and then there are still a few smaller factories like Kraft in Walcott that might need a yard driver to shuttle trailers in and out of docks.

But OTR? I don't blame her for not wanting to go live in a closet!
OTR is highly overrated right now with the way they are paying 80's and 90's rates and lying to you that freight rates are down! They never went down the way these Bottom Feeders say they did! Just a way to pad their pockets using rookies who know no better and fire experienced old timers!

    Good luck animialangel!
