I go to a church with a lot of old people who have constant computer issues, they always ask me to fix them so I do; not usually too much wrong. Whenever they decide to replace their "worn out" computer they give me the old one "in case I need parts"
So I always have a pile of perfectly good computers that are maybe a generation or 2 behind but they have awesome specs for a Linux distro with one of the leaner GUI's.
I always install PcLinuxOS with one of the smaller GUI's that is "Windows like" and I load it up with LibreOffice and a bunch of the free games from the repository as well as Firefox for the web.
An old dual core with 2gb of RAM will scream with a Linux distro like this, it will edit photos and rip videos in record time as well without ever crashing.
I give these computers to kids all the time who need a computer for school but can't afford one, my grandkids love playing on them as well so I keep a few laptops set up the same way around the house for them.
The hilarious part is how these kids think these are very expensive computers because they are so fast and never crash, their parents have much newer computers with much better specs but they think they must be inferior because they are so slow
I keep one Windows box running so I can use Quickbooks but if Wine ever figures out how to run Quickbooks natively I will say goodbye to Microsoft for good.
Fast, stable, free, secure and access to every conceivable software you want is a pretty great thing in my opinion, long live the Linux Coders!peterbilt_2005 and NightWind Thank this. -
BSD is the foundation for Mac OS X and Solaris was proprietary until they made a version for Intel then Oracle bought out Sun and then opened it up with Open Solaris.
TO the OP, used Kubtuta (sp?) Linux for years, got tired of it when I wanted just to do simple tasks, and had hardware - kernal - issues. The hardware at the time should not have been an issue but it was.
Also needed more power, so I went to mac and never looked back.
I use linux OS for raspberry pi and other SBC for different projects.
Gave up on windows when they came out with the authentication scheme, it felt like I was renting the software and needed permission to get to use it.
What ticks me off is that most of the apps I should be using are windows apps and makes no sense why some of them need to be updated to match the new version of a software or security patch. -
Wow... And I thought I was alone in this universe...
peterbilt_2005 and lilillill Thank this. -
I had Mint on my laptop but my #### Rand app is windows. Didn't have time to dual boot.
Linux is much more suitable of. Just wish I could run everything I needed -
I keep Windows on one box for iTunes. Bought some video from them, that was a mistake...
When I get a new box I wipe the drive and put Linux on it.lilillill Thanks this. -
It's been a while since I played with the penguin.
Who remembers this guy?

Whenever I get a buddy asking if I can take a look at his parent's computer, it's more often than not an ancient DELL running a completely jacked up copy of XP. In these circumstances I wipe things clean and drop a copy of Xubuntu on it for a new lease on life. Works fine for people who just want to browse the internet securely and adds a safeguard against drive-by installers and other nasties.
I personally haven't been running Linux as my desktop OS but will be next year after I roll out Windows 10 and am forced to rebuild my workstation. I'll be using Qubes as the bare metal hypervisor and will be performing administrative tasks from within this userland. Windows 10 VM with GPU passthrough for Photoshop/Lightroom/Office/etc and a Fedora Workstation VM for all other purposes (web browsing/IRC/jabber/etc).
Who knows I might do something completely different by then but this is what's in my head right now. -
btw Android runs over the Linux kernel
skellr Thanks this.
