Actually, after a few of those (divorces), I've finally found an incredible woman who has been by my side with all that has happened to us these past 18 months. And I will tell you (and everyone reading) that if SHE left me, I would not blame her one bit. However, we are both getting older and for some reason, I think our temperaments have calmed somewhat.
I actually left trucking back 15 years ago to obtain a new career. 4 years in a maritime academy and close to 10 years at sea on a drillship took me away from driving until the big layoffs began 18 months ago. I'm one of the victims of that world crude oil over-supply and so, since offshore drilling has been severely curtailed, I wrangled my way back in this industry. And, here I am...
Just out of curiosity, if you were on the road for Christmas...

Man can't you deadhead somewhere? Seems like that is a dead area. Personally, I'd had left out of there on the 23rd and gone home and hit the restart button mid week.

Well, now the storm and has come and gone and from my hotel window I am seeing the Interstate (I-90) is back open and people are driving and me? Stupidly still sitting. -
And that is why I'm self employed.....I worked all holidays in my 1st career. Missed a lot of family time and moments. Now, I refuse to work holidays unless I chose to, which is very rare.
Most years I only work the 1st couple of weeks in December and then go home until the following year.swaggerjacker, againstthewind, Crusader66 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Every Holiday we are on the road, we get paid 2x's our hourly wage....plus, regular mileage pay, and stop pay.
I don't have to be in a truck stop, or under repairs for that.
My Holiday pay came out to 34.40/hr for 8 hrs.
####, sorry man, if that happened to you.
But, it's the nature of the business.swaggerjacker Thanks this. -
No holidays on the road here. Been there, done that!
Used to work 180 days a year..... None of them were holidays. I feel like I gave enough when I made myself available on the weekends. -
buy your own truck, get yourself home, buy your own christmas dinner, quit relying on a company to do it for you. yes i know thats what these "companies" do, they have to "sell" you a "job", i guess it makes them feel needed when really theyre not needed at all, well except for people who cant pay their bills and cant run their own life.
