Yes, preferably P&D to work during the day. I have read/heard that with enough company seniority, a driver can bid to get a daytime linehaul run. As for the hours at my terminal, it's been roughly only 17.5-18 hours a week. But it's supposed to be picking up so maybe it'll bump up to 20 hours a week. What daily start times are they offering you?
They aren't yet. It's too early still. Just offered me the job 2 days ago and is waiting on me to get back to him as to whether or not I will accept. I know there are two different shift options: 3 AM - to like 9:00AM and like 4 or 5 PM to 10 PM. If I can't get 30 hours --or close to it-- I'll probably have to get another part-time job temporarily until I begin driving, which I am willing to do. Unless I ultimately get a line-haul position working days, I may look at hauling fuel once I get my 2 years experience in. We'll see.
Still waiting for my offer letter. Said I should have it in my inbox by Monday. I plan to accept the offer.
They said at their terminal there are two different shifts for doc workers: 3AM - to 8 or 9 AM and 5PM until around 10PM give or take an hour or so. It will be tough to make it on the part-time income until I can get a full-time driving job, but I will get another part-time job if I have to.
Terminal manager indicated that I'd most likely be eligible for the July/Aug. Driver's training school so I just need to be able to survive for 4-5 months on part-time income. He further said that they currently have more openings in P&D than in line haul. I'll go wherever they want me.
Keep my posted as things develop. We're pretty much in the same boat, you're just a few months ahead of me.
How are you surviving on the part-time income? Do you plan to stay at OD for the rest of your career? Would you prefer P&D to Line-haul?
My 'day' job for now is as a self-employed draftsman (drawing house plans). If all goes as planned and I get to driving for OD full-time, I'll only do drafting as I have time for (or as needed). God willing, I do plan on staying with OD till retirement. I'd prefer P&D...but I would do linehaul if needed.
