I got my CDL at my College. Was proud to do something to support my family as opposed to just have a JOB....`I had a trainer that liked to leave his pee bottles next to my face as I slept(waking up to it on my pillow most mornings), slept or played games more then teach, loud music and games as I slept but wanted complete silence as I drove. Now I know this was his truck, but seriously??? No one taught him any manners! Telling me not to kill him but not allowing me to sleep...Gee I am surprised my sleep deprivation didnt get us both. But I held on thinking it was all worth it in the end. My trainer kept asking me why I wanted company, telling me I will not make any money as a company driver. Laughing with other l/o on the phone saying yeah I got a comp riding with me. When I finally got back to Kansas terminal to test, the O/O man came in with his fancy suit. Telling everyone who doesnt sign Lease will drive a Purple truck..Who wants a purple truck. Then promising miles, we will take care of you, home time etc. They sold me. I ended up signing the lease.
First week 780 take home, 2nd week 634 take home, 3rd week NEGATIVE, 4th week, NEGATIVE....Ummmm yeah. I can make more home on Stamps and ssi/unemployment then working. I came here for a job and well pay...I did not expect to work for a truck and fees....I have rent, children to feed, power/water..I cant even get health insurance for my children to see a doctor.. Selling sperm pays more right now. I keep requesting loads and they say we are searching. No preplan. etc. etc.. Sent me home 3 days early and gave me a load where I had to sit for 3 days so I had barely 900 miles. Yeah they really are trying my patience.
If I quit before 90 days they say I will owe them 10,000. I dont know what to do. Rent and other bills come like clockwork. If I dont get some miles now, Come May, my wife and kids will be on the streets and I cannot let that happen. And she cannot work because daycare for 4 kids will kill us. Thats all she will work for, daycare for her, truck for me...So whats the point in working being gone when neither one of us brings home bill and food money. My dispatcher never responds and when he does, he is hours late.
And now I am at risk of owing more then 10,000 and never being able to work for a trucking company with a cdl I worked so hard to get....T/A definetly won a scam on me. Now I am in between calling it quits or sticking it in hoping they will give me enough miles the next week...I am not asking for 4000/5000 miles. Just a weekly 2500-3000 would be enough, but all I get is 1000 if not 1400....This is not working at all.![]()

Anybody (person, company, CEO, CFO, etc) who will offer a "lease" (or whatever they try and disguise it as these days) to anyone who has not driven as a company driver for a minimum of 2 years prior (and recent) should be SHOT. That's about as pleasant a way as I can say it.
Hitman, Preacher Man, Tennessee Trucker and 19 others Thank this. -
5 year lease? Ouch. You are going to get a lot of not so good comments about this but hopefully some of the experienced truckers will offer you some sound advice. I feel for you and wish you the best outcome possible.

in the 90's they where all company trucks, no lease, i made good money there, company's that push the lease are losing money, that's where NEWBIE'S come in with star's in there eye's, you buy the tire's that go flat, the oil, the maintenance, workmans comp, and to much more to mention here, look for a company that has more company truck's then lease, try and stay so you don't lose money, and your trainer most likely made extra money from you going into a lease instead've of that company truck, maybe ask if you can switch to company truck but they need money, people are eating alot less mad cow meat now then they did 20 years ago

Sad fact is a trucking company can utilize a "lease truck" to move a load of meat from Dodge to Jersey cheaper than a company truck (the way the typical lease is compensated in the contract at miserable rates based on equipment/maintenance costs from 2003) ... hence the huge strides for many to add to the size of their lease segment as fast as possible. What's good for the corporation's bottom line is usually bad for the individual "worker's" bottom line.

They just ordered 1000 new KW's as per Paccar anouncement at MATS. Maybe you can sweet talk them into letting you start from scratch with a new truck. Just tell them what they want to hear, sorta like what they did to you to get you to sign on the dotted line.
All I can say is.......................un-effing believable! -
Ok push there bluff tell them that you were coherst into this deal under false pretences they have not kept there part of the deal they can have there truck back and you will not sue them for breach of promise this it not legal when making a contract both parties have responsibilities to live up to there contract will not hold water if you can only work for them eg there name on the door say good by or sue there assis of for breach of confidance or wrongfull representation good luck
ghostrunner Thanks this. -
I don't understand how one can be considered a L/O when they don't have the freedom to find their own work. If T/A controls your freight AND leases you the truck, then says you have to stay 90 days or pay them $10K, and THEN proceeds to give you no freight with which to earn a living, I'd call that attorney fodder. Lawyer up, don't come here for advice.
Unless, of course, you share some or all of the blame for not getting loads / miles. But then, you'd certainly be honest with us about that, right?Jackofalltrades1977, zentrucking, Hanadarko and 1 other person Thank this.
