Your state must have a big heart and aren't putting him out of business. Or else they are enjoying the

Way way back in the day I got pinched running local. I was explained the error of my ways and given a warning. Mr DOT man explained in no uncertain terms that he was a nice guy............. only ONCE. After that I would be fined out of business in one setting if things did not change immediately.

He wasn't kidding. He explained all the things wrong and the associated fines.......... woulda been over $3000. And like he said...... it woulda put me out of business.

    I straightened right up.

Some of the locals I get here are that way. Everytime I see them I know they are overweight. I'll stop them or they will just pull over and wait. We'll greet each other by first name ask how each other's family is doing and get to business. Shake each others hands and say see you next time. It's a game to a few of them, see how many times they can beat me and I see how many times I can catch them. This cat yesterday is not a big rig hauler, he operates baby trucks F350 with trailers doing a service. Obviously he is new to DOT rules and thinks they should not apply to him and that he is better than everyone else. :biggrin_25525:

I knew many drivers like your talking about... heck we had some regular drivers that would even call us when they were heavy or had serious safety issues. Same thing with the "small" trucks crossing the state line ,no logs,no safety equipment etc, mostly seafood haulers. And we also had our share of "steering wheel holders" too , but they were rare.

My company was like that to a point when I was working as a mixer driver.
The weight limits they allow on a tandom mixer in NY, even with permanent permits are just way too low.
The mixer has a 10 yard drum. And the truck I drove was a belt truck, so had a conveyor belt system to place concrete a distance from the truck.
With NY's weight limits I could legally only haul 5 yards of concrete on that truck, or half a load.
So if we ran all of out trucks at legal limits at all times we would need twice as many trucks to do the same job.

Lucky for us they did not scale us often. One reason is that the load had a very short shelf life. If you hold that truck up for 30 min, many times you would loose the load. Every time if it was a state load.
I was the one pulled in a few years ago. They got me for overweight axle, overweight gross, and overweigh registration.
Owner of the company insisted I went to court with him. I talked the judge down. (I had met her before).
They threw out 2 of the tickets and did the 3rd for less than the state minimum. So we paid like 385.
The total of all tickets would have been over 10k

With safety check week in progress, I guess everyone out there is keeping it on the straight and narrow, or staying off the highways. There'll be plenty of idiots coming out of the woodwork once ''sweep week" is over.
