IMHO one additional hour of driving before or after the 11/14 hr work clock is reasonable. Of course that definition happily matches the time it takes me to commute to and from work. (I take my truck hove once in a while)

Whatever the rules say. With no distance specified, if he meets the definition of the rule, then he's legal on line 5.

I am an independent O/O. Have bobtailed as a personal vehicle 100 miles or so on several occurences.When my pick-up was in shop used Freightliner to get around ,once I drove to show truck to friends kids birthday party group, maybe 80 miles away, too big a hurry to go home and get personal vehicle, drove it 75 miles to visit daughter, use it to move my dogs around [ more room in sleeper ] , many reasons. I routinely drive it into town from my house [about 15 miles ] to buy groceries, eat at cafe. Not just used to pull trailer.

First of all, you can't be under dispatch. If you have been dispatched on your next load, and you are heading in the direction of that next load to pick it up, you cannot claim "personal conveyance".
If you ARE under dispatch, you can use personal conveyance so long as you return to the location you were at when you went off duty prior to going back on duty...for example, if loaded, you can drop your trailer at the motel/truckstop and bobtail around town to eat, go to a movie, etc. while on your break, then return to your trailer to go back on duty again. If empty, dropping the trailer isn't really necessary, but it makes it much easier to find parking wherever it is you are going while off-duty.
Second, I am unaware of any limits to the distance in the regulations. If I am regularly dispatched from the yard, my commute home from the yard and returning back to the yard the following day to pick up my next dispatch would be "personal conveyance"...however, if I received my next dispatch over the phone while at home and had to travel to the yard to pick up the trailer or the load, I would not be able to use personal conveyance heading back to the yard because I'd be under dispatch.25(2)+2 and dieselbear Thank this. -
I'd take the individual circumstances under consideration.
At one time, my home was 78 miles from where I dropped my trailer.
Sometimes, I'd bobtail it.
But in general, given a reasonable explanation, I'd guess 100mile radius. -
I heard it was 25 miles. Reasonable distance to find a resturaunt off duty.

Case in point is the Drivers side steer tire.
It holds air, but in my opinion has a very slow leak somewhere. He has repeatedly told me to, "just add air", and "I'll take care of it later."
He is the type of boss, that as much as me might like you, will terminate for telling him that the truck doesn't move until fixed.
Regardless of how nicely you put it.
The delivery comes before the truck.
I am personally fed up with the BS trying to get him to see the light of day in regards to keeping the trucks legal.
