I had heard that...Wolf, except I'm local only. Seldom outside a 50 mile radius. That's right, I said 50 MILES. So, I'm always back at the yard to end my shift, or at worst I park the truck in my driveway for a night.

Injun Thanks this.

That said, if I was going to be off duty for that amount of mileage, I would most likely place placards over my DOT numbers saying "Private Coach: Not For Hire." This should avoid any confusion.volvodriver01 and Roadmedic Thank this. -

Being said : that is described ( by safety ) as only what's needed like get home from terminal, wash clothes, local Walmart for supplies and 20 miles is a number thrown around allot.
It's always been forbidden to take any trailer with you...for any reason for at the least could / would be used against the carrier in court if an accident occurred AND it suggests to the LEO you're working thereby voiding the PC rule.
I use it bobtail only and keep it under 50 miles round trip which I think is "fair". Other have pulled empty clean tank wagons to their destinations to prevent theft and tampering however I maintain Mr. Leo could consider that "under dispatch" and cite you.

The key questions are: What's the purpose of moving the vehicle? And To whose benefit is this vehicle move?
Answer those questions and you will be able to determine whether it is on or off duty.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
Well here is what I had. Unladen driving over 1000 miles. Took a load and dropped it and was on his way back to his home area. Stated personal conveyance. I asked what was his purpose in heading back home. He stated, " To get another load." driver had drove over 1000 up, got unloaded and was headed back, out of hours and wanted to use the personal conveyance. Many are right there is no mileage limit set as of yet in the US, Canada has a mileage limit of approximately 50 miles. The regs state "short distances" for food, rest. The way I understand the regulations this driver is just headed back to pick up another load and run straight thru again.
Big Don, Injun, volvodriver01 and 3 others Thank this. -
That was not personal conveyance. He was moving the vehicle to pick up freight. Deadheading to a pickup is on duty driving. It was not to his personal benefit. It was to the benefit of his business entity. This makes those miles "dispatched" miles. He was under dispatch.
If you shut him down, you made the right call, in my opinion.Big Don, volvodriver01, rocknsand and 3 others Thank this.
