Yes Sir, no Sir has gotten me out of a lot of pinches.
I do not volunteer info that was not asked for.teddy_bear6506 and chalupa Thank this. -
I am with brickman. Yes sir, No sir. Military responses. Just stick to the facts, I no longer try to take the upper hand. Yes sir, you have me dead to rights.
Tried and failed once, was pulled over for speeding (2 years ago in personal vehicle), tried to explain that the speed I was pulled over was not the operating speed. As the officer hit his lights too quickly and did not establish what speed I was normally operating at. (darn tourists) Eh $185 learning curve, sigh 10 over limit. -
I don't call somebody "sir" or "ma'am" just because they wear a specific set of clothing. They do not "outrank" me just because they carry a badge and a gun. That's not to say I am disrespectful of law enforcement.
When I have contact with them, I start with a friendly greeting, ask what they need, am polite and, depending on the officer's demeanor, I will joke around with them a little. Cops are people, too, and they actually like being treated as people, not as if they are just stuffed uniforms.
Very unlikely to hear me call a police officer "sir" or "ma'am," though. Yet, most of my contact has been positive.
As in all sectors of society, there are arsehats on the job. They still won't hear me calling them "sir."Lokix Thanks this. -
I always just addressed them as "officer".
It is the simplest way to address them fittingly with a grain of respect and it hasn't worked against me yet. And in keeping with the theme of the rest of the thread, if I was caught dead to rights, I was honest and didn't come up with lame excuses to justify my wrongdoing.
Like dieselbear, 95% of the time, that honesty was appreciated and I was dealt with accordingly. If the LEO was in the wrong, I saved it for a court of law, not the side of the road. That just compounds things.Injun Thanks this. -
