what the heck does 'we are not a hazmat shipper' even mean? i'd bet every place thats gotten stuff has had some form of hazmat at one point or another.
i know where i work shipping out pool parts we have corrosives, ORM-D and at least one other hazmat item.

heck even some non-hazmat stuff can have some pretty nasty fumes to it. a truck delivered to us the other day and someone where he was loaded had broken 3 cans of red lacquer in the box/trailer. i could smell it from probably 20 or 30 feet away from the dock door. you can't tell me fumes that strong wouldn't pose a hazard to people.

I don't know what that means either. I know we pick up regularly at a place with import radiator 's for like NAPA,Autozone, O'Reilly's........

Big sign where we get bills about not a Hazmat shipper and a number for drivers to call if anything is marked hazmat on BOL:biggrin_2558: No idea I figure it's an insurance thing, or like a carrier must be hazmat certified but that's a WAG.

Wisbang that was what set my radar off. It was like an MSDS but different. Had a copy out of ERG book attached, description had PG and UN.......

Hey SM got one for you from Ga. What's missing in this picture?

They tell us new drivers.....get your haz-mat. You want to be a contender, and marketable don't ya? All in good time and experience.

I had my hazmat for 10 years. Back when I got it, all it took was a written test...no big deal.

Then, they changed things up and I had to take a day off work and go get fingerprinted & have a background check run. They want you to go online to do that, and I do not put my personal information out there on the web. Luckily, the place I went to wasn't very busy and they let me use their phone to call in the background check....then I had to wait for it to show up in their system before I could be fingerprinted. They usually do not allow drivers to use their phone like that, but like I said...it was slow and I was the only person there.

The hazmat loads I have hauled over the years never paid any more than the non-hazmat loads...and they usually went to places I didn't really care to go. Most recently, to hazardous waste dump sites where you have to dress up in a paper hazmat suit & wear a respirator in order to go back and unload. Screw that. Not having the endorsement gives me a perfectly legitimate reason to refuse the load.

I just can't justify the $95 background check plus the loss of a days wages....especially if I had done anything which would have disqualified me from being eligible for the endorsement since the LAST time they ran the background check, I'd still be sitting in a reserved room at the gray bar motel.....not out here driving a truck.

Until companies start paying extra for hazmat loads...or paying hazmat qualified drivers a little more...I'm not reaching into my own pocket to keep it on my license. I want to see a return on my investment, or else I'm not making the investment.

I will guess $250 a placard..... probably depends on the agency / court.

You do get that this is entirely the drivers fault yes?

I like alot of Drivers gave up on the Hazmat BS.... Use to pull Nuke waste and Missiles and Explosives...once they stopped hauling it to Barnwell because it was full and Yucca Mountain didnt open i gave it up.... Paid a ton of money but only a few are hauling the stuff now down to white sands to store it there...and not getting paid like we use to back in the day...
