I Have not read through all the posts yet. So this may have already been Said .

So how about on the final CDL testing less emphasis on the offset backing in a parking spot and more emphasis on a thorough test on what to do in emergency braking situations.

Not just down a steep grade but in emergency immediate braking situation.

I think many of these new drivers cannot Fathom what 80,000 pounds is and the inertia behind it .

I always imagined my fathers 48 foot sailboat that weighed 32,000 times 3

It had a a 28 horse diesel with a 2 bladedprop. Kinda like docking a Supertanker.
It taught me to respect the energy in a large heavy mass as my father let me dock it at a very young age of 9.

Most people in Cuba do not know how to drive, let alone dream of ever owning a car.

Oh, give the Cubans a little credit. My son just came back from a visit there, and he said, they aren't as backward as most people think. They sure have some cool cars,,,

It is also the fault of the drivers too.
Why are you driving a truck with bad tires, brakes, air leaks etc.
There is a reason for doing a pretrip inspection.

I flipped my jake off last week and the toggle broke off on my hand. I was reminded of the space shuttle crashing because of an O-ring

Teaching a new driver to pre-plan his day, includes the highways, and obstacles their going to encounter.

Makes them aware ahead of hills mountains they must climb and descend. You need to start down the hill with a bit of caution, not balls to the wall.

One thing Steven's does correctly is teach there new drivers know to roll off a hill without the benefit of Jakes.

I'm currently driving for AJR Trucking doing USPS loads, granted their lite loads, but we also do not have jakes, which I do not find to be a problem at all.

As I stated in an earlier post, you can not teach common sense. I see go go down Sepulveda Pass and the Grapevine at speeds in excess of 70 maybe 80, thinking they can drive better than us old f@rts out here.

Down hills need to be stressed to new drivers by there trainers....

That is why my trainer taught me how to correctly downshift going down a hill, when in school we were told to never do it.
Sometimes you need to, and you should know how to do it safely.
