Okay so here goes, I start school on the 31st of this month, c1 school Little Rock AR, my questions/concerns are this, I have very little experiance with trailors, I mean other than pulling a few, and maybe backing a few of which I had to take my time on lol, Shifting, another thing I have very little experiance doing, I've never owned a 5 speed, I have driven one a few times, but never got alot of time, I mean it was someone else's truck lol, so I guess what i'm asking is, can the skills to operate a semi, and pull and back a 50 ft, trailor really be taught to someone like me with such little experiance, or am I in for a world of hurt lol? By the way i'm just wanting some answers here, if you feel the need to make fun, or try to make me feel stupid are anything like that just save it!
Just some questions

I had 0 experience. I didn't even know how to shift a manual.
Suffice it to say I had even less experience than you did.
..and I did it. I wasn't in for a world of hurt, I was in for a world of...."this is all really new to me" so I just, well, did everything the instructors required. Listened to them, did what they said, watched what they did, made some mistakes but learned from it.
You'll be fine. Just go in there with a humble attitude and a willingness to learn and you'll be fine. -
Look at it like this we all had to learn and just use common sense and always if your not sure get out and look.

every truck driver had to go through the same thing, so don't worry about it. just do your best & follow instructions & you'll do fine.

I'm sure you will do just fine. I do have to ask.....why C1. Is it because of the sponser thing with Pam and USA ? No money out of pocket? This is just based on what I learned when I went through school a few years ago.......and I found it very important. There may be nothing wrong with C1, but dont get tunnel vision for your training. Really look around at all of the training in your area, especially community colleges (a great way to save money). One thing most new guys do not realize is that all the better companies will pay for your training through monthly reimbursement once your hired......so dont get stuck with and certain school or trucking company, really make sure it is a good fit. The skills your concerned about will come, some fatser then others......I would be concerned about choosing the best school and company, because as new driver that will make or break it. Take that for what its worth, thats just my 20/20 vision from a few years ago. Also when you find a company that might be your best fit (where they run, time off, benefits, etc) make sure they hire from the school your going to attend. I would also stick to a company with manual transmissions if you can, as it will be harder to select a company down the road, if all you have been trained on and driven as a driver was an auto.

Thanks Sequoia this was encouraging! -
You have to realize some people have it and some don't. The "some don'ts" are rare though. It's not rocket science and really just involves time and practice. Some are naturals at it others can take a little while to pick-up. One big key is to relax and take things slow. I think most people are nervous about the immense size of the vehicle and being watched by others. Nervousness will eat up your concentration! So put it to bed and relax. Not going to hurt to give it a shot is it?
Welcome to the forum and good luck to you.
