Do the load boards at truck stops pay higher? I am having trouble finding $1.58
Don't jump Blackw900. From what I hear he might have a "for sale" sign on his truck...but only to buy a new one.
Personally, I would probably brag as much as I thought I could get away with about my rates around $1.60/mile. After a little stomping around in glee, I'd probably start closing my mouth about it. Tell people you are just getting by. Tell people how harder times are. They have no idea that you are hauling for twice what they are when you are saying that. And they never will...
Its kinda funny if you think about it. You have two trucks and two drivers going down a road. One is a company driver. He goes on the cb and tells everyone that he is saving his hard earned paycheck so that he can one day buy a truck and "be his own boss." The other is an Owner Operator, thinking about how dumb it is to trade a stable paycheck for a world of insecurity and doubt. The OO tries to play down how bad it is for him. He says things like "if you plan right, you'll make it." The company driver hears that as a challenge. He thinks making it means he will have financial freedom, and the ability to tell everyone that he is a businessman. What he doesn't know is making it" means getting that same paycheck that the company driver is already getting. Both think the other one is doing pretty good. And on the side of the road, there are cows eating on the other side of the fence.
That is my take on it anyways. If you can get approved by Landstar to lease on, you should be able to get a job with some company that is hiring.
just starting out as a o/o

I'M SURE THIS WILL AMAZE YOU, BUT FOR A $1.25 PER MILE (AFTER EXPENSES) WILL STILL NET ME $4-4.5K EVERY 4 WEEKS. AND THAT'S GIVING ME A VARIANCE OF, GIVE OR TAKE, OF 6% TO PLAY WITH. THIS IS BASED ON 2,000 MILES PER WEEK. THIS IS BASED ON POWER ONLY WITH JBHT. 2,000 MILES MINIMUM TO 2,500 MILES PER WEEK. 2,500 MILES WILL GIVE ME AN EXTRA $800 PER WEEK (X4 WEEKS) FOR A TOTAL OF $3,200 EXTRA FOR THE PERIOD. $1.60+ PER MILE, WELL, YOU FIGURE IT OUT. HOWEVER, MY UNIT, INS., AUTHORITY, ETC IS ALREADY PAID FOR SO ALL MONIES ARE CLEAR PROFIT. AIN'T IT GREAT?

except then you need to start subtracting for maintenance and repairs, taxs and health insurance if you truely care to compare to the company drivers paycheck. that's not free and clear money
