It’s going to be very very hard not having at least a year experience OTR as most major places like Landstar, Mercer etc that O/Os lease on to require 1 year.

I mean.... I guess In theory you could get your CDL and buy a truck and go after it... but if you’re gonna go that far you might as well go all the way to getting your own authority. Good luck.

Whatever you do, don't purchase or lease a truck from someone who controls your dispatch. The smarter but seemingly road less traveled is to make sure you have good to excellent credit, be prepared to put up 20%. You can get it for much less in the short run but in the long run you will be upside down. I also don't recommend buying a truck until you gain a few years experience because it's not all roses out here. There are several reasons why they are having a hard time finding drivers to stay in this field. Thanks to deregulation it's all cut throat out here and nobody wants to pay anything worthwhile. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's not like jumping in an RV and going on a vacation. Good Luck

Those feedlots you worked for and that you know about would be a good place to talk to, they will tell you if they can provide the work and the prices you might expect,

going to have to work at some company for a year and then buy a truck ..... then go to landstar or mercer ....... I am at landstar and take my wife along quite often it's easy to get anywhere in the country or Canada you want to go. ... I am 60 and not really semi retired but we do take a few vacations a year on the truck besides visiting relatives scattered around the country. .. this year we went to key west , Virginia Beach, Las Vegas, northern maine and Vermont for the fall . and prince Edward Island .. thinking about Alaska this summer but just a little leary of a breakdown. anyways with landstar they don't bother you about where you go or how long you stay there ... now I have a brother in Spartanburg and we go for the weekend a couple times a year ... stop in see cousins scattered around the country often just for dinner and evening out . still I get loads to those places so it's still a job but I set my own scedule. and still netted over 100k . but you can't start out like that you need to get some experience first my truck title is in my filing cabinet next to the personal vehicle titles and the deed to the house , so you are going to have to work and get ahead before it's more like a vacation lol
