The truck stop would laugh if I asked if they would give me a free or reduced price on a full up if I become a regular customer..

They already have those types of incentives. Buy enough over priced fuel and you get a "free" shower etc etc.

Never heard anyone haul anything for free. And to do it would be insane!! I know guys who bid a consistent daily lane on the cheap side, but giving a product away for free, such as a sample is a LOT different than hauling a load for free.

Nothing more expensive than a "free" meal.

I would not do it myself either for the simple reason that it would be me personally executing it, therefore too painful to bear on body and mind knowing that the effort is for free. And for those running solo, these so called relationships are overrated at best, even if they exist. Even his idea of inviting a broker for a dinner seems too awkward to me. Too pretentious and it is hard to escape the notion of sucking up to ... a potential customer but I am not dismissing the idea completely as bad for others though.
Maybe a fleet owner of quite a few trucks can delegate a driver for the task to try and earn someone's business. If I had 200 trucks and send one to do it, maybe it would not be such a big deal for me then. It does not apply to me, I dont care.

A 100 or better, or even 50, truck fleet owner wining and dining a broker for some actual decent volume is one thing. A single truck owner op seems like somebody trying to be something they ain't to me.

I completely understand what you are saying, I have never heard of anyone doing it other than what was written by the OP. I know companies that have bid a really cheap rate to get a contract, only to fail miserably and to loose it.
