Keep volvo or sale

Well after reading all the reviews I've decided to go ahead with at least getting it running and then taking it to a shop to have them do a inspection and hopefully give me a good idea on were it's at. With that information decide whether or not to keep going with it or sale. I'll come back after I've taken my next step and give an update.. Appreciate all the replies as they've given me a bit more piece of mind in this endeavor.

You just cannot start off any better than a free truck.
OP can work at his current gig while getting this one road worthy, but plan on spending at least 10K to do so. At least then you should be able to go at least 2 yrs without any major breakdowns.
He can have a shop go over the truck with a fine tooth comb.

Exactly what I'm doing with my W900L right now, it was my plan A until I was ask to come back to EZ, a company I had worked for for 11 years. War on coal took my be at home with my wife job. Now there is no worries, just bought my wife a 2016 Z71, bills are paid, and I may go farther with the Kenworth than originally intended. But I do 100% of my own wrenching! at least on these (non computer) trucks.
OP, if you are mechanically inclined do your own look see inspection of the truck, look hard, bugs hide in small places. Then find a trustworthy mechanic to give a 2nd opinion, starting with a free truck is the dream of many, but it can go 1 of 2 ways.... Good - or - Bad. Take your time and look closely, you have plenty time with no payments.

Sounds like a sound, intelligent choice. Remember though a shop will want to get some money out of you sometimes, even when not nessasary. Be wary of there recommendations.

He bought it brand new and leased it onto dart until 4 or so years ago at which point they were trying to force him to put a electric logging device on his truck and he ended up quitting because of that driving it home parking it in the yard and there it sits currently. Probably going to need some break work, battery's etc. Also the truck has over a million miles on it and it will probably need tires even though they have plenty of tread but it has set for some time and people have said that they will have probably developed flat spots and could possible cause some serious stress on the road and all.. Part of me want's to fix it up just enough to get it moving and sale it because of the great possibility it will be a can of warms, another part wants to fix it up and just run with it considering I will have no payments and I do have some knowledge on were and what this truck has been through which you probably won't get buying off a dealers lot. It's been owned by one veteran truck driver and it's pulled refer's all over the country.. So it's not one that's been past around like a slip sit truck would or had several owners or in the oilfields abused etc.. So any advice to help me make a good decision and forgo any unnecessary stress to put it nicely would be appreciated.

If the rest of the truck is as clean and straight as what we can see in that picture, good chance it was well maintained. I suspect getting it going is a good investment, even if you decide to sell it vs operate it. One idea would be to check out truckpaper.Com and get an idea if what it would sell for in running, drivable, dot passable condition. Keep an eye on your expenses vs that determined value.

Selling a Truck is only about waiting till the right buyer comes along. Recommend: take to the dealer sell truck by consignment...wait it out. 3+ years for the sale

Oh I just read where you said it's got over a million miles on it... That kind of changes the game because what... 2006 are emission motors... Only an EGR valve but still... That motor has been sucking in its own exhaust for over a million miles. If a bypass filter was not being used the motor is probably loaded with soot... And I don't know how accurate a 4 year old oil sample be... I know this is not really a cut and dry yes or no answer but these are the points I would be drilling myself if I was in this situation

what is a bypass filter and were can i get one and were are they typically located on the truck?
