Nobody ever told me this when i went to truck driving school and for the past 3 months i been looking down at the pavement too much while driving and its been stressful, even scary, and stressful on the eyes.
When you drive a big truck you want too -
1. Keep eyes straight ahead and level basically
2. Since your higher up than a car you will be looking much farther ahead and using your peripheral vison to drive.
3. You eyes will occassionally come down to scan road closer to you naturally as you dont want your eyes in one postion forever anyways
THIS IS A REALLY BIG DEAL AND PEOPLE DONT SEEM TO TALK ABOUT THIS OFTEN ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO TRAIN DRIVERS TO FOCUS EYES PROPERLY...
Keep your head up and level !!. Look straight ahead .. Very very important

@Humblepie I’ve been telling you this for how long? Leaning over the steering wheel looking down in that Transtar cabover is bad on your back and unsafe.
@snowman_w900 maybe now you will air up your lowrider Boston seat to see past the hood.
Thank you for this post, Mike. -
I bought this old square hood Kenworthington or Kernewerts? (I think that's how its spelled) and the hood it way bigger on it than the semi I had in trucking academy. I think it was called a Freightrunner or FreighterLining?(again not sure on the spelling) and the hood was way shorter.
The only way I can do what I was told to do in trucking academy is lower my seat all the way down so my eyesight looking out is exactly level. I can see real far out, I just can't see close to the hood which makes me nervous, but I just stay 5 or 6 tractor trailer lengths back from whatever is in front of me. I stopped at a toll booth in WV once on the turnpike and I didnt see the car in front of me when i paid my toll, i took off and was pushing his car so far that the car tires caught fire. I seen smoke and thought I blowed my radiator so I stopped.
I learned a good lesson that day. So I went to Lowes and bought a laser level that I set on the hood and I put a sensor on my hat. If I raise my head up to far, it beeps and I know I have to set back down to keep my eye site level with the hood.Isafarmboy, D.Tibbitt, Lepton1 and 16 others Thank this. -
