Curios how many guys use technology to its fullest to keep in touch with your family.
I'm a 3rd generation driver and times have come a long way for trucker families. Smartphone, tablets, ipads with video chat capabilities. I remember when dad would call from a pay phone most everyday. Now you can't find a pay phone.
How many guys video chat, Skype, etc with their families.
We are planning to start a family next year and while I will be home every other say or so, it will still be nice to have the option to see my baby via video chat.
What brand or model tablet do you guys recommend? Are the ipads worth the price?
keeping in touch with family via technology (tablets)

I have a Samsung 10" tablet WIFI only didn't want the additional cost. Plus if your phone has tethering you want need to pay for that is assigned to a carrier.
crb Thanks this. -
What app do you prefer for video chat? Would be nice for wife to able to video chat with the desktop computer. -
For what it's worth, I was never a fan of an Ipad... until I was given one as a gift. - Now it has replaced my laptop as my goto piece of essential electronic. I use mine for Skyping, IM'ming and emails & whatnot. The reason being, that because of its size it is so #### PORTABLE. I downloaded a bunch of maps, games and other ways of keeping myself amused.
As far as the cost. Well, with tablets nobody has more 'apps' (mini-programs) available.
Generally speaking, if you have an interest, you can find an app for it.
Also. Because an Ipad is by far the most popular tablet out there, you can literally find tons of accessories and also support via the web-community for just about any issue you're likely to encounter.
Mine has Wifi & 3G as well. - Wifi is the cats pajamas for this sucker as I can watch Netflix from a truckstop or on the road with my data plan.
Skype is really good for video chatting imo. And really simple to use.
Regards.crb Thanks this. -

There's only one problem with the iPad: it runs iOS. I resent the fact that you need to face Cupertino, bow three times, and say "Mother May I" to run any app on the device.
A year ago I dumped my iPhone (which had been given to me) and went Android. If I want to write an app for it, I can install the SDK and write it. No needing to be blessed with a dev key. -
Is there any device that can do skype, internet, and phone, so I'm not paying for service for a phone and a seperate device? Thx
-
your phone does skype, internet and phone. no need for anything more.
heck, it even plays music. does gps. and texts and emails.
the phone can do it all. and if you have an android. it can be cheaper then iphone. cuz most apps are FREE. -
