About me
I am John[JT] most call me.
I own a motorcycle repair shop that I want to take on the road for a few reasons.
#1 I have been stuck in my garage for the past 4 years now
#2 Want to see the USofA
#3 Can do business and pleasure if all goes to plan
#4 mid life crisis
#5 secretly wanted to be a trucker...
Kids all grown up, all over the USA, ditched the last wife #3, now just me and my dog.
Drove bobtail Isuzu 40' local delivery for 2 years, had a friend that let me drive his Kenworth a few times [highway only].
I want to travel about and see customers and races & friends as I go, no real plans just GO.
I am looking at a 1998 Kenworth T2000 toter/garage conversion for my business to work out of and live in.
listed at racingjunkcom
Has a Detroit 60 [model# not sure yet]
Has a Eaton 10 speed auto
twin screw with air ride [do know gearing yet] owner says will do 70 has a 72MPH limiter.
Has 700K miles on T2000 -not sure about the engine and trans.
What questions should I be asking about this rig?
I have been snooping for a while and have seen some interesting comment on the T2000, and how some people love/hate some engine manufactures.
Thanks
JT

Welcome aboard.....ask 100 different drivers, you'll get 100 different answers. You can do an oil analyses. Of course, history helps immensly, if you have access to it. 700K on the odometer ? You don't know if the trucks been idled a lot, which means additional engine wear. You called it a toter, is it a current toter, or are you refering to it as your toter ?

it is a conversion already, converted for snow mobile racing. Conversion was done by cobramotorhomesandtrailers.com, I like the idea that it has 2x the garage area to living space.
I will ask about oil analyses..
what it looks like now in upstate New York, will be going to see it in a few weeks. what should I look for concerning tires??

Detroit 60 12.7l [700k+ miles]
ECM= DDECIII - Is this an upgrade after market part??
HP tag = 435
Dyno = 365
Blow By = 633 (SCFH)
Not sure how to convert this to inches of water [4" or less]
Oil sample =all in range but [Mg =84, Ca =2275, Zn= 1220, K= 7]
These are out side of the table [Normal] I have, most look like detergents Zn is the one I am concerned with

based off what you've said, Gauges going out, Airbags rotted, miles and engine history.
I'd walk away from it. -
MN
What am I missing?
Air bags can be had $50 each
Gauges -Yea that can be a $$$ thing. Most likely a bad connector -I do not know.
What do you see in the Engine results -please share I am a newbee...
Thanks -
The gages is the biggy on this for me.
You could get lucky and it's that easy or you could have an electrical gremlin.
Ask yourself this.
If it's this old, and it were just a connection, wouldn't the previous owner have fixed it by now?
The air bag sounds like dry rot to me. How much of the rest of it is the same way?
Take all that and look past the whiney paint, I'd really take a look to see if there's something better available.
Couple that with not liking the T2000 platform.
