After my situation, I take dealer's advice with a grain a salt. If something isn't working, it is what it is-not working. Not being an internet mechanic but something definitely has to be defective to experience the problem you have.
When it flashes the gear that your in, that basically means the ECM can't find it. Does you truck repeatedly throttle up while it's flashing the gear? My transmission downshifts to a lower gear if it can't find a gear or it flashes F. Another problem I read about here in the forums, was broken or bent shift forks in the transmission shift bar housing.
kenworth t2000 with ultrashift.

it does not throttle at all because I have it on manual mode it just wont let me go to the next gear. I think it does have something with the ecm other wise it would let me change gears. I called the dealer here in California and the wait time is 2 weeks just to connect the scanner to my computer. I took it to a shop and they connected there scanner and told me that everthing was normal other than a short and they gave me a code of j1939 I google the code and nothing came out. that is why I seek help here.
thanks -
Do you have the Smartshift module that sits on the steering wheel?
-
no I have my control next to the dash its a push button

Ok. Even though its different the same diagnostic principles should be the same. I will try to find some other solutions. I will post what i can find. Id hate for anyone to go through the nightmare i experienced.

You could also have a bad output shaft speed sensor too. That went bad on mine and i couldnt shift past 1st in manual or automatic. The only thing is i received a check transmission and check engine lamp. This was a cheap fix because the sensor was about 50$ and a mechanic charged me 70$ for 1 hour labor. Its not hard to get to and you may be able to fix it yourself. I just didnt have time to mess with it. If the main speed sensor is bad the price goes up drastically because it sits on top of the tranny between the cab which may require them to take the driveline apart.

My last truck was an Ultrashift and the one time I had a problem with it the first thing the shop told me to do was park it and disconnect the negative battery cables for 15 minutes and then hook them back up. It is supposed to reset something in the computer for the transmission. It became part of their regular service on the trucks.

That was my regular routine until it went kaput.

I only ever had to do it the one time and I never had another problem after that.
