No thats just a different model. There is no upgrade from a W900.

It looks like an International 9300 with T880 headlights. But those headlights really ruin the whole package.

Where does this fit in the Kenworth lineup? Is it supposed to replace something or, allow for new sales in another area?

I think we are missing the point here. W900s sell because they are W900s and NOT aero cabs. The model in and of itself is the reason it has stayed in production all these years. There have been plenty of other trucks that have come and gone.

If Kenworth wants to move on, it’s their factory and I’m glad to see a “semi” classic look continue but from everything I see and read W900s are still selling like hot cakes. No real reason to change it other than “change” itself. You can say that Pete has made changes but the overall 389 looks #### close to its predecessors. You are loosing that special look and tie in IF the W990 is indeed the W900 heir apparent. Certain people say yes, others have well placed sources saying no. Only time will tell.

T600, and now the T660, T800 and W900 all shared the same cab and sleepers. T680,T880 and now the W990 will become the future line up all sharing the same cab and sleeper configuration.

I was told the change to the new model has nothing to do with the current volume of sales for the W900, but because the current B cab is still hand assembled and the new 2.1 M cab is robotic assembled. The 2.1 M cab has less quality control issues and yes they can build more of them in a day than the B cab.

Personally after getting to see the 2.1 M cab with interior stripped out of it, I’m pretty impressed with the design and construction of that cab. I also like the layout of the new cab better than the B cab I currently have, I’ll admit I’m 50 years old and have some back problems so being able to stand straight up right out of my seat will be nice. Plus the new cab has a flat floor so it has more leg room than my current truck does.

Thanks for the information. I’m interested to see what they unveil and stare in a few days time. I’ve heard this song and dance before, specifically from Ford. They dominated the Crown Vic market with almost 90% of law enforcement sales and livery sales. They somehow got it in their heads that they didn’t want to update the Crown Vic and the market will follow with the products they offered in its place. Fast forward 5-7 years and they maybe have 50% market share on the law enforcement side and very little if anything in the livery side.

The market does not always follow. If you are selling W900s like nobodies business and making a profit, then a good business man finds a way to keep that product line open. If you can keep selling W900s and add on W990s now you have kept your market share/profit and added to it.

If you go to Kenworth web site, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the social media of your choice then you can see the 3 or 4 teasers they’ve put up.

I get what you’re saying and don’t totally disagree with you myself but I can see the reasoning behind the decision.

Personally I’m ok with what they’re doing, this is the truck I’ve been waiting for, still a nod to the classic truck with the new comforts and technology.
