Full flow filtration is when all the oil gets filtered in the spin on oil filters mounted on the engine. Bypass filtration is when only a small percentage of the oil is filtered at a slow rate through a very small micron filter. Like a spinner, a OPS or other similar filter. Lubefiner used to make a large filter for just about every engine that was a bypass filter.

No, OEM filtration and by-pass filtration are completely separate systems. You guys may want to do more research and less guessing, just a thought.

Yes they are separate systems, But the ProStar with the MAXFORCE engine has a spinner from the factory. Drove one the last 2 months, that would be an OEM filter that was bypass. They probably wanted to get soot out of the oil. AND, The signature truck Kevin built is running again. Many people feel they are part of the process, but it is between Pittsburgh Power, Kevin and Jeff and Kathy. Let them work it out.
RedForeman Thanks this. -
Like MNmover said, bypass filter systems use a very low micron filter -- one with such restriction that the engine would starve for oil if you attempted to use it in place of a standard oil filter. Instead, only a small portion of oil goes throuh the restrictive low-micron filter at any given time -- the rest bypasses it to keep the engine supplied with enough oil. All of the oil is still filtered by the oem "full flow" oil filters, & evetually all of the oil should have a chance to go through the bypass filter.
The advantage of bypass filtration is that some particles missed by the standard oil filters are caught which could potentially allow you to run your oil longer between changes. The downside is cost & complexity.
OEMs are moving to bypass systems, but I'm talking about pre2003 enginesLast edited: Apr 5, 2015
