In the September issue of 'Movin Out,' Bruce writes about a customer finally averaging over 10 mpg on a trip. Duwayne Ehrke and his DD powered (built by PP) 1998 T-600 with every option PP has that produces power and increases fuel mileage, driving between 57-58 mph in 11th gear, which is direct.
What ever happened to the saying "time is money?". Do many of you have the patience to drive 58 mph? By the time you get to your destination any possible back hauls are already gone.
PP still has the pics of the failed glider and engine in their ad.

Henry Albert broke the 10 mpg barrier with his Cascadia with a DD15 on a run from California to NC and ran it at around 65 mph. I talked with him about what RPM he was running and he ran between 1375 and 1425 for the trip. If I recall correctly, he was at around 70K on total weight. So one does not have to drive like Prime, nor do they have to have the engine running just above idle speed. This was all documented by Freightliner.

As for whether one is having to play load booking games when they get there speaks more to their stupidity than driving slow. If you are waiting to book the next load after you get there you are really screwing up. At any speed one is going, one knows, roughly, when they will be where they are going. At least they usually tell the consignee when they will be there. So planning the next load and booking it should not be that complicated. I guess that is why I never sit anywhere waiting for the next load. I have it booked before I even get half way on the run I presently on. But I think we all can see the mindset..... back haul. There are no back hauls, only loads!

Only back hauls I pull are of the sail boat fuel variety. I will bounce empty before I load cheap.

I hear a lot of guys (and gals) saying they'd rather run empty than run cheap. What is the reasoning behind that?

I can see that. Keep the rates from being cut. Was just curious since I've about had enough of wrenching and am looking into maybe going OTR for a change.

You will find out that when decribing freight, the most common adjective used with CHEAP is HEAVY.

Here's an exercise for you: There are a bunch of loads (big project) going from Houston,TX to Beaver,UT. 5000lbs. Pays $5 to the truck all in. You get offered a "backhaul", 44000lbs, going from Cedar City,UT to Lafayette,LA for $.88/mile+FSC. What would you do?

Book something else than the .88 freight or not go at all! I am not going to stick my butt out somewhere that the only thing that is available is a poverty load. That probably explains why there are some areas of the country I have no business going to.

I have no problem going to those black hole areas. But I go in with a rate that more than covers my bounce back out.
