When my youngest son was 4 he spent a couple of months with me hauling produce in my old Pete Fatcab. Best codriver ever. Months later Hot Wheels cars were still falling out of places when I tilted the cab over. Now 16, he still remembers blowing a tire in West Texas, then eating the biggest pancake he`d ever seen. He saw 2/3rds of the country before he started school.

Like I said, times is hard.

If the media wasn't in cahoots with the president you'd probably see pics to rival the great depression.

Truckers are "lucky", we have work. We might not have any money, but there's work for us.

I often have labor-ready guys help me unload, you'd be amazed at how overqualified some of them are. I have a former hospital administrator doing packing jobs for a moving company. It's nuts.

Anyway, my kid's safer than I ever was. I remember my Mom had a Mustang II (the uncollectable one), my Dad had a 280zx, I remember riding in the "cargo area" of both. (under the hatch back, apparently the 'stang had rear seats but I don't remember them at all, the Datsun definitely didn't). I remember riding on the "package shelf" (area under the rear window but behind the rear seats) in my Grandparent's Buick. (can't believe I was ever that small).

We didn't have airbags, mom would "karate chop" me in the chest every time she had to hit the brakes!

    obviously I died.

I remember standing on the running board of a 52 chevy between hay fields, it was that or walk. I think people are way to safety conscious these days. People think I was joking when I said played with dirt. I REALLY did play with dirt occasionally one of the guys trucks would be parked and you got to play truck driver. I remember siting in the seat of a 4320 John Deere making motor sounds and acting like I was disking. Dinner was at noon. Lunch was at 6 if you weren't there you didn't eat. There was no snacking you ate when everyone else did. Lead paint hell yeah we had it I didn't die. Growing up like that teaches you a lot of things that the tv or video games don't teach you. I enjoy electronics now but up until I was about 15 I didn't know how to use a computer. I grew up working to you got to play if there was still day light. I wouldn't trade it for a thing either. You wanna talk about work sucker tobacco all day taller than your head in the river bottoms.

When I was 5, I started thinking about being a truck driver. My dad used to work at Kephart, make round trips to nyc, pickup garbages, and drop off at land fills near altoona, pa.

I have many fond memories of riding around in the truck with my dad for as long as I can remember. At the time he worked for a construction company, I'd go ride around with him moving equipment, hauling rock, etc. Actually my first real good solid memory was when I decided I needed to learn how to drive trucks. He got pulled over for speeding, something to do with the speedometer in the tacograph not working right, anyways he goes back to the highway patrol's car and I was at the age when 2 minutes seemed like 2 hours. Well I couldn't see past the scraper through the mirrors, and started panicking looking over trying to figure out how to drive the dang truck, thinking I was going to have to go back home, and find his boss and get him to go bail my dad out of jail! Since that day growing up I just figured I oughta learn how to drive a truck!

Some of my best memories as a kid was riding in my dad's truck. It was a purple Prime truck and I had a jacket to match it lol. All of my siblings spent quite a bit of time riding with dad during the summers. We actually fought over who got to ride with him.

My bf's company doesn't allow under age 10 which makes my oldest very happy (he just turned 10 lol). He's going out with Daddy for Spring Break and at least 1wk this summer. He's already figuring out how to keep track of where they go and doing extras around the house to earn money for a camera. He will have things to occupy himself when Daddy is loading or unloading so that's not a worry at all.

What other career field would not only allow a parent to bring their child to work but also 1) provide a learning experience better than any classroom and 2) allow premium chances to get closer with your child? I know I did better at American geography after being in the truck and never talked as much with my dad as when we were on the road.
