If you look on google earth you can see that while there are some trees here and there it’s far from a treacherous mountain road. I’ve always suspected that the reason it’s restricted is because of it wasn’t there’d be people getting themselves into a bind in winter. The elevation is fairly high on parts of it and I wouldn’t want to be out there in a blizzard. I only ever ran it in the summer, if it was fall and the weather was a little iffy I would run north out of Lakeview and take the long way around.

It’s probably not a road for a newbie to be on but if you have some common sense and aren’t afraid of taking a chance on getting caught it’s not terrible in decent weather.

Are we talking about the same 140 in OR? Between K Falls and Lakeview there’s a few sharp corners and once you’re out of the canyon at Adel it’s smooth sailing out across the high desert except for one long pull with a good drop off to the west.

Along the border with Oklahoma there is a 5 mph posted curve. To the inside mountain, to the outside no posts that sometimes follow trucks punching through into falling space 500 feet. And the rest sky. It's a pretty place to die.

Another road before the interstate was completed was signed "Crooked" for Fayetteville through the woods. I did not have any trouble with that one. It is crooked.

That's the way to go.. I do it very frequently.
395 to Alturas.. 299 to 139.. turn north to K Falls.

140 does have length restrictions once you get in the passes.

I agree going through Alturas to KFalls. It's a more direct. I live off 140 in Beatty and I bring my rig and trailer home frequently. My home terminal is in Medford, OR and it's a straight shot from my house. ODOT spent 2 years and a whole lot of tax dollars a couple of years ago straightening and winding the road. Quartz Mountain and Bly Mountain Passes are easy peasy. The chip trucks run between Lakeview and KFalls daily with about the same weight as yourself. Like I said, Alturas to KFalls is more direct, but you will have no problem with either route.

I've done it from Lakeview to Klamath Falls then over to Medford. This was about 3 years ago and they were doing some major construction, but I made it just fine with a sleeper truck and a 53 trailer. That route from Nevada into Lakeview I've also done, and as somebody else mentioned, you don't know that it's restricted until you're too far into turn around. Made it to Lakeview without being seen, but it was a butt pucker of a drive. If I had crashed, they wouldn't have found me for weeks or months. There just isn't anybody out there.
