I am considering getting back into trucking through Knight in Phoenix. I'm not interester in being gone weeks at a time so I thought their port and intermodal fleet might be a good option for me. I was hoping I could some insight about the work in general and Knight port services in particular pay scale, equip, home options etc. Any info would be beneficial., and appreciated.

I know nothing about Knight but you should also check out Duncan & Son Lines.
Been there 7 months and the only down side I've experienced is 6 days on, 1 off. I'm home 4 nights a week, spend 3 nights a week @ the ports, and average about 2400 miles a week.TB John Thanks this. -
Yes I would definitely consider Duncan & Son if I still had my CDL, but I gave it up several years ago. (big mistake on my part
) Knight offers schooling and training, kind of one stop shopping for a new truck driver.

I drove for Knight out of the Phoenix terminal for a few months earlier this year. Pay worked out to .38 CPM and that is with over a years experience and I was never able to get the bonus that was dangled in front of me. I drove the dry van side and can say that I only ran the Western 11, which is what I wanted.
There is no perfect company, but with my employment history I'm glad they hired me. They do hair follicle drug testing, which goes back pretty far. Even prescription narcotics will trigger a positive and you will need to present a prescription if you take them. Being how a huge number of people are on drugs, legal or illegal, if you are clean this is the job for you.
As for hometime, I never took any, but many drivers live locally and want to be back in Phoenix every weekend. The tractor parking area at the terminal was always filled up on any given weekend. Lots of short trips makes this a possibility if that matters to you.
I was issued a 2014 Freightliner Cascadia with an auto trans. No camera was installed, but eventually they all will have forward looking cameras.
The only thing I didn't like was the Zonar navigation unit, which put me off the truck route more than once.TB John Thanks this. -
I'm in a similar situation. Except I kept my CDL. Haven't driven a truck in a few years. I live in Phoenix and was considering Knight intermodal. How did this work out for you?

Yes I realize Knight is a starter/bottom feeder company. In my particular situation my reply is "so what?" I can deal with being a number and not a name as long as the checks are good.Pulling containers is the lowest form of trucking? Well, OK, At my age I don't need to impress anybody. Setting myself up for failure? possibly, but if at the end of the day if I've done my job, been safe, been paid, that is pretty much all the "success" I need.
