thank you to everyone for your kind responses!
My wife and I just got back from dropping off the tractor in Columbus. I had planned to talk to some potential employers today on my way back home but instead decided to visit my Aunt and Uncle who live in Newark, Oh (about 54 miles from Columbus) as I hadnt seen them in some time. I'm glad I did! It was nice to visit with them and reconnect. It had been about 1 year since I had seen them. I was able to put aside my troubles for a few hours.
Anyway, the actual turn in of the truck was anti-climatic. I had fantasized all nite what I would say and how I was going to tell my terminal mgr off etc... But I decided not to do any of that. The mgr actually had a letter of reccomdation already printed up and signed for me! I will have to post the letter here when I get it out of my 4 wheeler tommorow. I was blown away by the GLOWING letter this guy wrote! I have never gotten such a good reference from someone who FIRED ME! My aunt said he wrote it to aussauge the guilt he feels for firing me cuz he knows he is wrong. I CANT WAIT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU FOLKS!
He actually came out to the truck and looked it over, video surveillance all over our yard and with the letter he wrote, if they try to trash my DAC, I dhould be able to rebut any claim they make.
Well, I'm gonna start my job search tommorow. So if anyone knows where I can find that local, or hourly job out of NE Ohio, pls let me know! Thanks.
A bit of good news, my almost brother in law (the 1 guy tighter with his money than anyone I know), out of the blue, offered to pay for my background check for me to get my Haz Mat endorsement back! Between not having the money or the time off, I have been unable to get it back. Having the Haz Mat should open ALOT of doors for me. Aint it funny how God works sometimes? If you folks think about it, pls pray for my family and I to find and hear God's will in all this mess and be open for His work to get us thru this, no matter where it takes us.

    Good morning Dave,
I was just sitting on the back patio at my parents' house thinking about what I might say to you. I came back inside, sat down at the computer in my dad's office and went to your thread. I had thought and thought about what to say and finally came up with something absolutely brilliant. But I'm not going to share it with you now - you've got your own solution and it was there all along - "Aint it funny how God works sometimes?"

Ya know Dave, I've gotta say, It's refreshing to see someone honest enough to admit that they might not be ready to buy a truck!

    Kudos to you for that!

You really do need to work on the temper thing though...I know 'cause I had a terrible and quick temper when I was younger and it usually caused more problems for me than it cured.
I know for a fact that one company that I was leased to in the 70's didn't terminate my lease bacause they were afraid of what I might do and then they tried to starve me out but that didn't work either...

I'm a lot easier to get along with these days because most of the time you learn as you go and after a while you have a better perspective on things.

You have to work at it though...

Sorry to hear about the loss of the job...But it will probably wind up being a good thing in the long run, Anyone can see ffrom your posts that you hate OTR work and so maybe now you'll find something that you're better suited for.

Well, Dave, I have to commend you for owning up to your anger problem. That is,without a doubt, 80 % of the solution. As an almost 64 year old guy that has been around the block a few times, I can say that your way doesn't work and I think you are realizing it just about now. I am the most laid back, easy going type person you would ever meet, but, I have "lost it" a few times over the years and then wondered in amazement how I lost control of myself and what brought it on. But I can say that as an older guy, I would never "lose it" today, for reasons I "lost it" in years gone by.

When you actually think about it, what good does it do to lose control in a situation? And you have lost control when you are angry over a situation. Ever watch COPS, the t.v. show? Ever wonder what these people think of themselves when they watch the episode they were filmed in? Yeah, you can medicate yourself, but, don't you want to have control of yourself in a natural way? Life is not perfect, but try being thankful for what you have and honestly consider a new line of work. You know what trucking involves and why beat yourself up for nothing if it makes you miserable?

Sorry this took so long, I've been kinda busy trying to find a new job.
In the interest of brevity, I wont include all of the letter, just the highlights.

"David would be an asset to any carrier, over the road or local. Unfortunately, our company's freight environment changed and it has became increasingly more difficult to get David ______ home. David demonstrated time and time again his willingness to do what the company needed and stayed out over the road long lengths of time sacrificing home time with his family. This is a personal and professional letter of recommendation and I can confirm David"s work history, work ethis, and dedication to safety."

Does that sound like a driver that you would WANT to fire???

I always take such glowing references with a grain of salt...
Earlier this year I had some things to take care of at home for a couple of months. I decided to hire a driver for my truck so it wouldn't be sitting for all of that time.

I took a bunch of applications and narrowed it down to a couple and brought them in for a second interview and a road test.
One of them had reference letters from everyone he had ever worked for and they all claimed that he was "the best driver we ever had". He drove well and interviewed well so I hired him with the understanding that he would be in my truck for a couple of months and then he would go into another truck when I came back.

When I took my truck back, He quit! It's a good thing too 'cause if he'd been around when I found out about all of the things he screwed up on my truck, He'd have had a problem with me.
He was dispised by all of my regular customers and by all of the other guys that he worked with. He constantly pissed and moaned about everything that he was asked to do. He was constantly late with the freight and yet he spent all of his time telling me and anyone else that would listen how great he was and how lucky I was to have gotten him on my truck!

I learned two things from the experience:

    1. I will park it next time and will never even consider hiring another driver.

    2. Maybe sometimes these companies just write a glowing reference letter to get a guy out of their hair.

I'm not necessarily pointing this at you Dave, You have your issues but you are at least honest enough to admit and be trying to deal with them to a certain extent.
I'm just sayin' that letters of reference are in my opinion not worth the paper they're written on.

Dave,....Take a look at every ltl in your area. The only place most will take an application is online.

Visit every one of them as well,.....If you don't bother them a little bit they wont know who you are.

It might take some time on the dock,...But in the long run it can be a very rewarding way to be a driver and a family man,...

Don't give up. With 11 months experience you should be able to get a local job driving dump truck or cement mixer, they are always looking for people. It's not a bad gig, home every night at least. Need to calm down a little though, no one wants a hothead working for them. Trucking is a tough business but it pays well. Good luck.
