Big Dawg, I've heard some things that make me THINK Knight (the Phoneix, Arizona version) is worth a look. But also know that back when I lived in Salt Lake City, I used to see a Knight help-wanted ad in the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper a LOT. You and I both need to check Knight's safety ratings and maybe look around the net for testimonies from disgruntled ex-drivers. I, too, would like to know something "definite" about Knight.

    Good luck.

They just added another 100 trucks to the Greenbay area. Since competition is tight in that area, Knight pays 'bottom dollar' starting out---just up'd it to $0.33/mile, irregardlesss of experience! Drivers that I have talked to ARE the getting miles, but can sit depending on the area they are at. Some of their probs involve equipmt---bought older Edwards reefers and have a mix of Thermo King and Carrier---Carriers break down alot!! Knight has always had one major problem: they want the experienced driver, but don't want to pay for him/her!!

Been driving for KNIGHT for almost 3 years now. They (mgmt) do a lot of things that 'tick' me off (trying to keep it clean) thru 'intense' driver manhandling (sorry gals). They are the champion of 'bean counters' (penny pinching) and have a great knack for 'ticking off' (again, clean) experienced drivers. Starting out pay is now up to $0.33/mile with increases for lower mileage brackets to $0.42 (100 miles or less). They get drivers home weekly since specialize in 'cheap freight' (same as Swift and U.S. Express) and short-medium runs. Nobody in upper mgmt has ever been a driver, and the experinced drivers around the terminals doing 'indoor/at home' jobs keep their mouths shut so as not to rock the boat (lose job for not being a team player)! Also, have one of the lowest trlr/tractor ratios of the bigger national carriers: bout 2:1 (most run about 4:1). Means more live lds/unlds and MT hunting (no extra $). They have lost many BIG customers since can't keep them supplied with MT's!! But having worked for a Swift O/O before, Knight is bout a 1000 times better!!! Like I said, they get you home weekly, usually 2-3K miles, no forced dispatch, don't follow out-of-route miles with a vengeance, pay daily, good equptmt, will up gov speed to 66 mph if driver meets max idle times (which is a killer in summer AZ), have Wabasco catalytic heaters in newer models to reduce winter idle times, and have several ways of running---casual (min 1 day/mo), express (4 out/4 back with slipped truck) and line driver (typically 6-8 days out/2 days off). Can stay out as long as desired! They now have all these 'Hometown Customer Care Centers' scattered thru out the U.S. and keep drivers close to so not many really long-runs! I've just got 2 more years til I retire and will probably stay on with Knight as 'casual' for a couple more years......

Climbing up and down off trailors, lifting tarps, picking up chains, and the biggest winching down straps.
