The petes are to costly to run 5-5.5 mpg, there to heavy over 20k with fuel, that means lost revenue, smaller loads, Knight likes the volvos, 6-7 mpg, 16-17k wt. There not crap trucks, They have regular maintence and are all under 500k miles. The long hoods sell for around 48k, the short nose 46k . The volvos start at 28-40k, most have the isx 400 cummins with 10 speeds, The volvo sleepers are small, like a childs youth bed mattress, the Petes are a little bigger but not much. They dont negotiate on price, I know I bought one of the blue volvos. It is not a knight truck, its set up for an 0/0 they got from a company they took over, It runs ok, no problems yet, I hope this helps you.

Your truck is one of the Roads West Volvos that was bought by Roads West (shared entrance at Phx with Knight with about 150-200 trucks) when they were expecting a big Govt contract that never came...they bought many new Volvos & Reefers in expectation of that contract. Most of Roads West business was short-medium runs (home on weekends), using experienced drivers with a lot of driver's assist grocery freight. They supported Great Southwest grocerys (Smiths, Fry's, Kroger), as I covered several runs for them when they cutback and eventually were bought out by Knight.
They were 'happy drivers' there til Knight bought them out, governed their trucks, and cut their pay...sound familiar???
Knight used to be all Centurys when I hired on in 2003, since they got the same deal on trade-ins, with 600-700K miles and perfect maint. records with Freightliner of $45K (?) credit toward a new Century (about $75K back then). Freightliner used trucks (Select) ended up with too many used trucks to sell as Swift, Schneider, and other big fleets also took advantage of the deal over the years. They stopped, pissed off the big fleets, and Swift, Knight started buying Volvos. Then Knight went to long-nosed Pete's for hi-resale but lost $$$ due to sq noses/3K heavier with big tanks and thus reduced fuel mileage. The Centurys and Volvos were more modern & streamlined and about the same in mileage (about 1.5 mi/gal better than the Pete's).
Sounds like Knight has gotten a new deal with Int. who Walmart uses...Last edited: Jul 7, 2010
Baack Thanks this. -
Didn't Roads West start off life as a Knight split off?
I'm surprised that Knight ever bought those Petes in the first place. Somebody must of screwed up on that one. -
Yeah, the long-nosed Petes surprised me (I used to fly to DFW, take a courtesy shuttle van to Denton to p/u new ones, and then get freight back to Phx). Phx gave me Xerox'd DOT info/name plate signs, duct tape to mount on fuel tanks, IFTA stickers, Reg & Cert book with the new truck #, recycled lic plate w/zip ties to put on radiator, and Pre-pass to take on trip back. They then added the top fairing, bunk heater, etc. and made officially 'legal' after got back to Phx. Originally Petes were for their reefer division (metallic gray), but new purchases carried over to their red fleets.
Knight did 'wise up' and eventually started buying the short-noses....partly because too many of the newer drivers couldnt handle them in tight places and damaged many fenders/bumpers as well as prop damage along the way...ha haLast edited: Jul 7, 2010
Big Don Thanks this. -
You guys know what your talking about for sure. I felt that Knight wanted to run with the big dogs and thought, hey Lets by some petes, but they have fallen out of love with them. They also thought they would lure more seasoned drivers into the company and it did for awhile, until they saw what they where being paid. Then out the door they went in a flash. The rates for 0/0s is still very low but it is consistent with the other big carriers. Even swift is running a campaign to get more seasoned drivers now get rid of the STUDENT WITH IDIOT FOR TEACHER persona.
truckerim2055 Thanks this.
