I have nothing to worry about because I work with integrity. I follow the rules the best I can. I have a family to provide for. This is not a hobby to me.

So you think that the END of every day you could pass a level 1 inspection with 0 defects?

If not, then you are not always 100% legal and you are at risk of accruing CSA points.

You know when you find a defect like a marker light out during your pre-trip,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

That means that for at least some part of the day before you were running with a light out and not 100% legal.

I've gone thru several level ones. I have never had a problem. But if you read my post that you are replying to, you will see that I do my best. Trucks and humans make errors. Difference is, I try to minimize as many errors as I can....but hey........We are all trying to do our best right? Or am I wrong?

I'm in favor of any thing that removes unsafe trucks and drivers from the road. There is a thread on this forum about a driver that was at fault in a fatality accident, he had 40 violations. If CSA2010 will remove folks like him, bring it on.

    KE5WDP Thanks this.

I guess if you want to bypass the issue of companies hiring/firing you based on your CSA points, you could always get your own authority and go at it on your own. True independence that way if you ask me.

    KE5WDP Thanks this.

But you do realize that there are many jurisdictions who have a financial incentive to write up as many defects and fines as possible. There are many cops out there who don't care if you are doing a good job of maintaining your truck, they just want to write citations to generate revenue. Like I said in a previous post, I can find some defect on any truck if I want to. I have seen brand new trucks that couldn't pass a through inspection from the get go. Mostly due to improper mounting of a truck body, or some other equipment that is supplied and installed by a 3rd party manufacturer.

How would a driver who is not an experienced mechanic even know that his brand new truck was not 100% legal?

In 1997 a friend of mine bought a brand new International heavy chassis for a boom truck. He bought a brand new Simon RO 4792 boom for it and had it installed by the manufacturer. It looked great and operated beautifully. I even took it out a few times to do a job. Doing a normal pre-trip everything looked great like a brand new truck.

2 years later he was having a problem with the back end of his Roadranger shifting slow now and again. I stopped by and he asked me to look at it. I slid under the truck and looked up and I couldn't believe what I saw. When they mounted the crane and installed the pump and PTO they cut a notch in the lower frame flange to clear the PTO. They didn't even do a nice job of it and round off the corners.

So there it was, a $225,000 brand new 23.5 ton 4 axle boom truck that hadn't been 100% legal since day one

I agree.. And that was the plan. To buy a truck, get it in great shape. But a trailer, get it in great shape, then apply for my own authority.. I'm not one to jump in head over heals with something I don't know anything about...

I knew about truck driving. I'd driven for 8 years before I bought a truck. But, there has been alot of things I've learned about taxes, repairs and other things that I didn't know when I was a company driver...

I'm still not against getting my own authority. But lately, the way the state has been attacking my buddy, I'm having second thoughts.. They are running him through the ringer. Mostly for things he didn't know about.

Some 4+ years ago they turned me down cause they couldn't verify my OTR experience/ or did not have enough. (They did tell me that) At the time, I was an independent grain hauler out of Lousy-ana, licensed for six states. I then went with "Plan B"; signing on with a small, local carrier, hauling chemical, permitted for the 48.
To this day, I thank Landstar for being so picky!!!!!!!! :biggrin_25514:
