I don't know a good reason why it takes so long other than they are very thorough in their background checks. I believe they have been using a third party to do their checks for some years. They may own the company, but it does seem to take much longer than most other carriers. With most carriers, you can get on within a couple of days. Sometimes, delays can occur when former employers don't fax back employment confirmations. Landstar won't approve a new driver or owner operator until they confirm past employment. I believe that when I leased to them that they still checked everyone in-house.

If it stays like it has been the last 2 weeks I will be doubling my income this year. -

When I checked their actual rates on their BCO load-board
( avail. only to BCO's)..
FOR DRY VAN, USING YOUR OWN TRAILER...
over 89% of the loads were paying (on average, to the BCO) $1.35/m plus fsc...so say...$1.43-$1.51/m ...
this search was completed 5 times( 5 different area's of the country, with a 500 mile radius ON EACH SEARCH).
Only about 11% of all of those loads were paying BETTER
( over $2.00/m to the BCO) ...and they were booked very fast, booked in less than 6min..
This was for dry van, owning your own trailer...
this was about Oct. 2011...and so I hear,as of Jan.2012...things are about the same.

It all depends where it's coming out of friend. It also depends on the customer. Most of ours go the national FSC. Landstar has their own FSC that's usually higher than the national. It's overall a good place. It's just not for your average every day steering wheel holder that can't think two steps ahead at all times. As you said. There's no dispatchers or load planners to do the back end stuff for you. The miles and money you make are all on you, so if you have a low paying week, there's no one to blame but yourself.

spoke to several guys...
they also tell me they have a hard time finding better paying freight(above their average of $1.65/m)..
(dry van freight, with their own trailer)
Really depends on what part of the country these loads are loaded/dropped.
