I've been reading some of this thread. My impression, from lurking, was landstar was mostly flatbed and you'd see most flat beds pulling for around 1.50 per mile + fuel surcharge (around 30 cents, depending).

F/S is around the .40-.50 CPM range. Depends on the current cost of it.

My personal experience with Landstar is several years old, but I will relate some of my own experiences. I did well with Landstar. I had a friend who also did well with them. I met a few who did not do well with Landstar. It is not a company where they will hold your hand. You are responsible for your own success. Landstar doesn't have dispatchers. They have agents. They operate pretty much like brokers. It is up to each owner operator to find those agents that have the best paying freight. You will find those who have cheap as well as good paying freight. You will need to be a good manager and a self starter. I don't have any personal experience with JB Hunt, so I can't offer you any personal experience with them. If you like being independent and running your own business, you may like Landstar. It is about as close as you can get to running your own authority without actually doing it. If you want a dispatcher, then you may want to look elsewhere.
Autocar Thanks this. -
