There aren't any up front costs. Insurance, plates, permits and the like are deducted from your settlements over a period of weeks.

CPP is basically an Owner/Operator version of Workman's Comp insurance. LS requires either it or actual Workman's Comp. Some states, like N.C. don't allow CPP, but require actual Workman's Comp, which is not cheap.

The only out of pocket expense is the cost of the drug test and your inspection. They will pay you .65 cent a mile to go get your first trailer after the first 25 of mile. Then they will load your fuel surcharge & 30% on your fuel card each load you book.

So you get 75% load pay and fuel surcharge or is that included In the 75%. I know 75% is with trailer and 65% without, now if you just use your truck and there trailer for 65%, do you still have to have trailer insurance or just bobtail. Thanks for the help everyone, I've been trying to decide whether to be independent or to lease on at land star. If I'm independent then I'd be working off load boards anyway until I can get some contracts so that's why I'm thinking land star. And one more question, is that percentage off what the shipper pays or what the broker pays. Thanks again. Dan

Tractor gets 65% of the linehaul rate, plus 100% of the fuel surcharge, plus any accessorials. Trailer is seperate contract, which pays a van 7%, plus any appropriate accessorials. The percentages are based on what LS bills the customer, whether that customer is a direct shipper, or a broker. You only insure your own equipment.

The processor gave me some more paperwork to fill out, W-9, CPP, cargo insurance, base plate.... So I guess this is a good sign.

I'm thinking about getting a truck and leasing on with landstar myself I like the fact that you plan your own loads and plan when you get home....do they let you plan for the entire week or do you have to plan your loads day by day?? I live in SC do they have a lot of freight in SC, NC, GA, VA, and FL??

Based on your other posts you haven't even got a CDL yet and no experience.
Landstar hires less than 10% of applicants and many very experienced owner operators fail in an agent based self dispatch system. Give yourself at least 5 years in a company truck and maybe drive for an owner operator so you can keep track of expenses and learn the business before you set yourself up for failure. You can make a decent living with your own truck but it's not easy money by any means.

I know it's not easy, I have owner ops all in my family that I could drive for but I want to do my own thing. Owning a truck is like running a business and business is my thing with me soon graduating from college with a business degree. And trucking is what I wanted to do since I was a child I was just doing my research and trying to get my ducks in a row and have my next move in mind. There is nothing wrong with asking questions. An unasked question is a stupid question.
