i have exp with flatbed stepdeck over size -
Rates will vary from one agent to another. Some have cheap freight and others have good paying loads. Some only book loads through other brokers or 3pls and but the good ones have their own freight. It is up to you to find the agents with the best paying freight. As to how much you can clear, that depends entirely on your expenses, revenue and how well you run your business. It will be different for everyone. You could go broke or make a lot of money. I think that Landstar still takes 27% of the linehaul rate. The BCO receives 73% of the rate. Some specialized trailers pay a higher percentage to the BCO. There are a few other fees that Landstar charges. You can find out about that by contacting recruiting or see if they will send you a copy of their contract. All deductions are listed. If you pull flats with Landstar, you will need to have your own trailer or rent one from them. You will also need your own securement equipment and tarps. -
Good Question??? do you have your own trialer (what type), what routes are you going to run? Can you do Oversized?
Off the average after expeses there is no reason you cant put a decent pay check in the bank, its on you how hard you run and where you want to run -

you need to do the expenses sheet and figure what your base expenses are then you will need to know what you need for base milage rate.
