I understand where you are coming from. But I am pointing out my experience. Just like you were. Yes my break even point is a lot lower than a lot of drivers. I am also willing to go to places a lot of o/o won't go. Seeing as how I live in one of those places. I work with the same three brokers and have for years. I never leave the east coast and I am back in Queens several days a week. For me it has worked out just fine.

Yep! And it never tastes good.

Find the safest drivers that will haul for the cheapest rates.
You can tell by the average Truck leased onto LS. Pride of ownership has gone way down. But they are still making a living, be it a modest one through tough times. Options are the key now. Averaging $2K a week and being at home is great right now.
As for the east coast and Queens, you can have them. LOL
Luck to you. -
Alway have this much too say? LOL -
LS goes through these cycles. You have to ride them out. Plus if LS believes that you are sitting at home they believe that you aren't making any money.
Load board always seems better after sitting at home for a while. But that's just my theory on how they control what you see.
But run when it's good and operating and maintenance cost seem to be a breeze.
Run when it's cheap and seems like you just can't get ahead, yet alone break even.
Play the game; just don't play by the rules. All these big logistic companies want new drivers daily. New drivers aren't as knowledgeable on how the cheap loads work.
The cheap drivers make them more competitive and then go bankrupt and can't get back in when as easy once they've learned what mistakes they have made.
You know, simple rules.
Don't haul heavy no matter what the freight is, unless you get paid for it.
Don't haul over mountains unless you get paid.
Don't haul oversize or Hazmat unless you get paid.
Always drive as slow as possible to save fuel, your #1 cost.
Save for repairs not a trip to Vegas. If you have money for repairs get a load to Vegas.
Pick loads close to the interstates, not little roads with stop and go towns and traffic lights.
Shop around for tires and preventive maintenance.
Get paid to tarp or don't tarp. Get another load.
Make sure you get a load sheet with your rates faxed to your truck.
All loads are negotiable, All aspects of loads are negotiable, IE tarp fees, Fuel, tolls, permits and so on. Ask what the detention rate is before you even head out to pick up a load.
Make sure that you are at the very least getting the national average on the FSC. Because you're still getting less than what the customer is prolly paying.
Stay in the freight lanes unless you have a back haul lined up.
Don't bounce more than 100 miles for your next load and don't get an advance to bounce more than 100 miles for your next load.
Always have enough fuel to get back to the house and then bounce to get your next load.
Just my opinion and a few of the things I do to run my truck.
Oh yeah, don't haul the cheap freight. You'll be sorry in the long run.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 14, 2009

You might want to contact the CDC about that.

hello,
i've been reading for a while and haven't offerded any oppinions. as i've been considering landstar, along with the other 40 million o/op's.
i agree 100% about this cheap freight crap! but it seems to me, WHATS YOUR OPPINION OF CHEAP FREIGHT!
i would LOVE to be making 1.98 a mile. heck anything over 1.50 would be awesome!
were running for alot less then that and still making it. IT SUCKS! and i don't want to do it. but i have to pay the bills. and personaly i'd like to keep my truck. and as far as landstar. basically from what i've read, if you have a good business sense and are willing to look out for yourself. you'll make it. right now i'm running to much deadhead. and loads that pay like crap! and still making it.
i know why some guys haul the cheap freight. it's simple to them it's not cheap freight! if you've been pulling freight for 90 cpm a dollar 1.98 sure looks good.
but i also have been around long enough to know theres two side to every page. if your used to 3 & 4 dollars a mile. a 1.98 would suck and 1.50 would seem stupid.
anyway it's just the oppinion of another old trucker just looking to better himself. -
Thats exactly how I felt. And my feet sweat alot.
