I'm thinking about leasing on to Landstar with a 3 axle double drop RGN trailer. The company I'm leased to has little to no freight for me but I do pretty well by going on various load boards to find freight. I'm basically paying them 22% for the privilege of running under their authority and fuel cards. I'm thinking LS freight and infrastructure SHOULD be better than load board freight? My concern is that when things slow down again the load boards are the 1st thing to die. Is the 2 axle with flip (3 axle) double drop RGN a good choice of trailers to work at LS? I can haul up to around 70,000 lbs more or less, but I usually look for wide or high loads - weight generally doesn't pay any more than they do. When I'm stuck I'll throw together a few partials and move on to greener pastures. I'm into working smarter, not harder!
Also, can you haul broker freight if it's approved by LS, or only Landstar agent loads? -

I notice that 5 axle freight is getting scarce, I think because TMCs and Mavericks are buying 2 axle trailers and cutting rates. I'm hoping that Landstar freight is better than what's typically on load boards.Last edited: Sep 28, 2010

Can someone PLEASE Help me out with this... Ive been company driver for little over 2years. So i was driving back home today and i saw VERY nice truck pass me with a ls on it, i called the number in the back of the ls trailer. And talked to a lady from dallas," im also from Dallas". I told her im VERY interested in purchasing a truck from ls and working for them. She told me my options are limited for purchasing a truck from them. I can only buy a columbia or a century from Highway sales Inc. So is that really only choice that i have? Have anyone ever purchased a truck from Highway Sales? If you can tell me some tips on with who and how to purchase the truck so i can jump with LS that would be great. Thank you

You can buy any truck and lease it onto them.

See if your local banker will make your loan first. If the terms are acceptable with them in my opinion that is a preferred choice of lender.Fratsit Thanks this. -
There are many places you can buy a truck from besides the place recommended by Landstar. Make sure you have enough cash for a nice downpayment to keep your expenses low. You should also have enough cash to keep your bills (personal and business) paid while your truck is in the shop.
Landstar is also very difficult to get hired onto. Once you're accepted they will give you 30 days to buy your truck. Also keep in mind, that according to many drivers it takes about 6 months after you're hired for you to start making a reasonable and steady income.
That being said, most everyone i've talked to loves working for them! -
Been thinking of leasing to Landstar pulling a refer. Can anyone give me an idea as to what the refer rates are like? Also figured that if refer freight wasn't available, I should be able to load dry. Any thoughts? Spoke to a recruiter a few months ago, got the app and copies of the load sheets for van, but no refer. Is anyone on here pulling refer that would have any advice. Are there any agents that specialize in refer freight, or its the majority of their available freight? I know I'll be able to make LS work. I've been leased on to another company that had dispatchers, couldn't stand the idea of putting my ability to put food on my families table into someone elses hands.
