Yup, can't no dispatcher tell me when I have to go home in my own truck but to each it's own.

Works that way when you're an IC pretty much everywhere.

So if I'm hearing this correctly, most lease ops and owner ops leased to the Swift, JB, Prime, & Crete's of the world can go home and work when they please?

That's right. It's one of the primary distinctions that allows us all to be paid on a 1099 legally vs being considered an employee of a company. IRS rules distinctly say that an independent contractor must be able to set his/her own work schedule, among other things. We get to decide when we work, where we go and when we go home. It's not something reserved for Landstar.

So, I guess they kill themselves at 90 cpm plus FSC to make a profit, so that's the reason they stay out 2/3 weeks at a time? I mean this is seriously news to me, I've seen countless O/O gigs where in the job description "Hometime" was 3 to 4 days after 14 days out.

But hey I got that "Freedom" to run less & make more and be home every weekend & at times during the week. But again to each it's on. Get how you can fellas.

Just because the rules are set up one way, doesn't mean they're always followed. The major carriers do it right because they have too much at stake not too. Shady jerks with a few trucks try to get away with everything they can... whether its legal or not. This example might be OK with the IRS depending on the other conditions set out by the carrier. A lot of these guys are trying to pass off situations that are really company employment to avoid the real costs associated with having employees. Very risky because the IRS doesn't look favorably on dodging payroll tax.

Doesn't sound very attractive to me. Fixed rate contracts limit your earning potential.

Only they'll screw with everything else. Leasing with CR England is like handing a lunatic a sharp object, pulling your pants down and hoping for the best. Never in the history of lunatics with sharp objects has it ever ended well, and the same goes for a lease purchase at CR England.

One of my best friends is leased on with Landstar. I'm learning a lot from him, as I'm one day going to go into business for myself. I can say with all honesty that, if the Landstar guys can read the load board correctly and have a good reputation within Landstar and make "friends" with an agent or two, they certainly make over $2 after giving LS their cut and after their fuel surcharge. I'm seeing how to be a succesful O/O with Landstar. It can be done, many guys are doing it and doing it well. They follow the philopshy of "Learning How To Work.
