    I am thinking very seriously about purchasing a new Dell 1420 laptop with a TV tuner and before I do, can someone tell me if television reception on a laptop is limited to local stations or can you receive signals via satellite?

    The fact that is has a built in TV tuner just means it's capable of acting just like a TV. You plug the tuner into any coax connection, whether it is from a satellite receiver or just an antenna or a cable box of whatever. It'll work just like a TV. It would have nothing to do with Internet stations, as those are transmitted over and internet connection, not through a TV tuner coax connection.
