We had a homeless guy living down at the beach in Bonita for years. About 40 years old.

Anyways at the time I was doing some major outside wood replacement on a house I worked on on the beach out on Captiva .

Back in Bonita He asked me for money one day and along the conversation I found out he used to do carpentry so I put him to work.

Now here's the kicker. I had a old house that was empty and small and plenty livable and I told him he could live there for free while he worked for me.

Things went alright for a few weeks but than Monday would roll around and I would stop to pick him up at my house and he said he was sick. Sick from drinking Budweiser all weekend.

Half the weeks he was broke on Tuesday even though he got paid $600 on Friday. Always having to stop at 7-11 to buy over priced lunch and pop because he would not go to the grocery store a block from the house and shop for the week.

But I put up with him for about 3 months because even though he was a half azzzed carpenter I had to keep an eye on constantly I needed to wrap this house up before the owners arrived from Switzerland.

One particular day I had told him the night before I wouldn't be picking him up until 11 am because I had to wait to pickup a door that was arriving.

I show up at 11 and he is drinking a Budweiser on the front porch. I said put down the beer and get in the truck.

He said no this is my 2nd beer and I won't be any good for you today anyways.

I really needed him to help me move and install this big patio door but I was fed up with him and left .

Got out to the house and found 2 Mexican yard workers and threw them a $100 to help me lug the door up to the house.

They stopped back by after they finished their job and assisted me with install just as I was realizing it was to heavy for me to do it by myself.

Booted the homeless guy to the curb after I paid him only to find the inside of the house a wretched mess.

He told me he was happy to sleep on the beach and not be tied down to a job.

Never again and I feel the same way about hitch hikers too these days .

I have a friend who was punched by a State Trooper who fell back, hit his head and died.

I've had different businesses over the years where I've had to hire temporary labour which I've done both directly and through agencies. They all have a story and they're all remarkably similar to yours. Also learned when hiring directly, never pay on a Friday. Pay either Monday or Tuesday.

A couple months after that incident I was cleaning up the house and the yard where I let this guy stay , a Mexican guy that used to work for my buddy years before recognized me and walked up and said hello .

He asks me if I had any work I needed done he just got back in town.

It was Friday afternoon and I had dinner and weekend plans so I gave him a walk around what I would like done and gave him a $100 and told him to keep track of his hours I'll see him on Monday to get paid and I had more work for him after this.

He painted 3 big houses for me inside and out. The guy was a monkey, he didn't need ladders, hanging off the roof scraping and painting , caulking facia .

Same with the porch railings. 35 feet up in the air. I kept telling him to at least where a harness or if he fell I would have to take him out to the Everglades.

Fast eager worker that did the work quality the way I wanted .

Half the time he would bring me authentic Mexican for lunch

Great guy but just disappeared one day after working all summer for me.

Pretty sure he got picked up and deported as I owed him for a few days work .
