    Hi there,

We booked a last minute load and were told by the broker that pickup is at a 24hr FCFS facility, and that we could load any time, and delivery is also a FCFS between 6 am and 4 pm. We go to the shipper, and they said it was an appointment at 8 pm. We showed them our rate con showing a FCFS and they didn't care- loaded 12 hours later. I then asked the broker, "Is it for sure that the receiver is FCFS and not an appt?" He said yes and that they want to unload by noon. We checked in at about 6 AM and they say. "You were supposed to be here on the 23rd (its the 30th today!), so we can't unload unless someone misses their appt. What the heck do you do in such a situation. Such crap! and yes...its a REEFER

    Thanks in advance.

    Two things your choice.

Stick it into cold storage and fetch it later.

Wait. And baby sit the load.

Non existence communications is your big problem and losses. Cut them out of the loop and find another to do business with. You must have accurate information to do this trucking right. Otherwise forget it.

    Or...

Bill the Broker for lost time baby sitting load. They did not convey to you the reality. The shipper and receiver are in their own worlds. You are just one truck out of a country full of trucks.

What you do is hash it out with that broker. Obviously they don't have their #### together. I'd be getting some compensation and getting through this one and I would not use them again.

Your username suggests you are new at this. You'll have a long list of brokers and locations to never deal with again in a year or two.

I hope you had some detention pay written into that ratecon, because that broker owes you big time. If not, I would fall off the job and find something else.

The last job I took from Coyote, they messed up an appointment time by 10 hours and refused to pay me detention. I left, and sent them a letter to cancel our work agreement and that I would never do business with them again.

Learn early, run from the refers. switch to Tankers or flatbeds, you tend to get loaded and unloaded lots faster. I never wait to load or unload, even back with pneumatics loading normally would tank an hours or less, same with unloading.

While it is tempting, don't hold the load hostage. It doesn't end well.

Currently you should try to work your magic with the delivery. Be VERY courteous but still remind them that you are not going away until they unload you.

Scour the fine print of your rate con. Look for detention rates. Chances are the broker messed up and omitted info so you would take the load. If possible, get the original delivery info from the consignee as ammo to go back to the broker with. Negotiate baby sitting fees for their failure.

What an insane morning! Thank you so much for all your replies and insights! The broker quickly called the receiver and we are now unloading (hallelujah!). From where I sit, it seems like the broker and receiver don't like each other at all.

This is how I feel most mornings:

Call and confirm pickup and delivery times yourself, don’t rely on the broker for that.

Never pulled anything but a hotshot, & a step. I love open deck & cant image ever pulling a box. The stories I hear I'm sure aren't all true, but I consistently hear of long wait times on both ends. 95% of the time I'm loaded & tied down within 1-1.5 hours. Then the consignee treats me like their long lost brother. Happy to see me, & I'm off loaded almost immediately..

In my experience so far, its 50/50. 50% of the time they will load you in under an hour and unload you in an hour. The other 50% is 10+ hours to unload. You never know what you're gonna get.

Right, that makes more sense. No one wants to complain that their load went right. Only when it was bad, so that's all people tend to hear about..

That makes it tough for load planning. I usually have my next pickup booked before I deliver, because I'm pretty sure I'll be empty & gear packed up in 20mins, to an hour once I'm on site..
